We talked about the memoir, and how my friend’s mother’s family had managed to leave Germany in 1938, after Kristallnacht.
My father said that my grandfather said that you really know it is time to leave when the legislature has been taken over, and the courts are no longer independent.

My grandfather successfully escaped two fascist take-overs and a communist revolution. Others in the family were not as successful. Jews were crushed in the Holocaust. Gentiles were equally crushed by the Nazi regime for agitating against its immoral government, or jailed after trying to escape the Communist revolution.
When asked, “how do you know when it is time to leave?”, my grandfather said it was when the citizens are deprived of basic civil rights by their governments.
We have seen the basic rights of non-citizens being taken away by our government rather routinely now, for more than 10 years. After what has happened at Occupy movements, I am seeing the rights of citizens being taken away. We have the perversion that money = speech and corporations = people, but when real people peaceably assemble, they are met with violence.
Democrats vs Republicans? Let’s say I want to go to Bellingham, a 100 miles to the north. The Republicans are headed to Centralia, on the freeway, moving along at a mile a minute. The Democrats are bicycling – they’re moving at 15 mph. But whether I’m traveling with the Republicans or the Democrats, I’m never going to get to Bellingham. I’m still going to Centralia.
My cousin and his family have already emigrated. They might be able to help us leave. Or there’s Canada, which is closer.
