ok so being pro on first go was never going to happen, ive fallen so many times its painful, i dug up an old pair of skates filled with living creepy crawlies.
How I did it: Found a roller ring and go from time to time. Four wheel skates are actually better for control but make sure the roller ring is lubricating the bearings in the skates periodically. Nothing worse than sticky skates - they can make you fall.
Lessons & tips: Learn to drag one skate lightly sideways to stop or learn to make a quick circle spin in one spot. If you fall try to land on your butt and try to catch your self slightly with your palms lower than your bottom as you fall but don't lock your elbows doing it. Stay flexble.
Buy your own skates and keep them lubed and in good condition. Metaflex wheels can be bought for 4 wheel skates that allow you to street skate. Your can dance with a partner better in 4 wheel skates - it is a lot of fun if you can get a partner to dance skate with you.
If you jump openings in the sidewalk and scrape skin on your bottom, do not use alcohol when you get home on the wound - unless you enjoy passing out.

and I survived last night. But I did not come out unscathed. Being on those rollerskates again was very scary. I was scared for all of us. I knew someone would get hurt. Of course I also so knew it would be ME!
Oh I am ok. I was actually doing great. Just like riding a bike it all came back to me. I even evenually let go of the wall and got up momentum to keep up with the others.
Then along came this big FAT girl and WHAM!... she knocked me down! She did not even even apologize. But the Skate Ref and my friends helped me get back up on my feet. Just a BIG bruise on my knee and a bruise to my ego.
It was really fun.

In my town, between grade 5 and 10 (as in before you got your drivers license and had better things to do), the main thing for kids to do was go rollerskating. I was pretty good, but when I did fall I did it hard and broke things. I worked at the concession stand at that skating rink when I was 15, it was neat. I kinda miss those days.
