How I did it: Bare myself before a stranger? Let her spread hot wax on my private parts? And lie there, contorted into obscene positions while she rips my hair out?

I was horrified at the very idea of a brazilian. That's why, as I walked to a small spa in Richmond with an old friend, I couldn't quite believe what I was about to do. T had told me that she was going for her regular brazilian and I was intrigued. Could it be worth it? Perhaps it wasn't so horrible if someone I knew so well could do it and look so cheerful - even excited - about her appointment.

Well, I did it. It was awkward at first, stripping down and lying there, naked from the waist down, waiting for the beautician to come. But it wasn't nearly as embarassing as I had thought - that was my main concern - it would be; the lady gave me a moment to take of my clothes before coming in, she didn't make a big deal about it (I guess she's seen many naked ladies) and she was reassuring and friendly while remaining professional.

The pain? Nothing unbearable. If the waxer is skilled, she'll be quick, efficient and you shouldn't feel more than a slight sting. Movies exaggerate the pain (women hobbling out after a brazilian). She distracted me by talking, and again, I was amazed at how the most awkward twisting and angling of my legs didn't seem to bother her. There I was under the bright lights, every flaw probably visible, and it didn't matter. I didn't expect that I'd walk away with something extra that day - confidence and ease with my body.

I've been to a couple of different places since (I was on holiday in Richmond) and stick to those. The feeling of being completely bare is wonderful; clean, soft and sexy.

• Go with a friend the first time
  
• Let them know it's your first brazilian
  
• Trim the hair so it's easier to wax off
  
• Stick to the same people / places once you've done it a few times
  
• Taking some aspirin beforehand can be helpful if you're really worried about the pain.
  
• Avoid tight clothes or hot water for about 24 hours after the waxing or you could irritate the area. Initial redness is normal and should subside within a day or two.
