Third card down! 15 months ago

I had added a balance back on a rarely-used third card recently. Well, I’m holding steady on two others and managed to knock the balance off this third one. Yay! I’m going to shift payments now over to the next lowest one and just continue to grind away. The way to make this really happen for me will require holding steady on my largest card. I’m adding this goal back on again.

    Trying NOT to backslide anymore.

Two steps forward... 16 months ago

I have made some progress and done some back-sliding so I’m probably at about the same place debt-wise I was when I started this goal. :(

The card I previously paid off is STILL paid off, so that is a good thing. My current card that I use pretty regularly has a three-digit balance for the first time in YEARS so that feels pretty good. But I pay way too much interest on that card – and I have a third card where I qualify for really low interest – so I’m considering a balance transfer just to get it wiped out and the concentrate on the final card.

The cost of a balance transfer is not appealing to me. But if I look at the interest I pay now and compare, the cost of transfering is like ONE MONTH of finance charge! I’m scared though. If I pay it off by transfering the balance, am I going to flip out and start charging it up? It does have some automatic payments that come off it but I can switch those. It’s the only card in my name that my husband also has – what if he charges some stuff and we end up with a balance again? That’s completely defeating the purpose because I need that card to stay at ZERO so I can direct all payments to the lower-interest card. Ugh.

I’m not sure what to do.

Ok, I had this as a goal and completed it. 21 months ago

Now I’m going to do it again. And again. Until I’m completely done and paid off and never looking at a balance higher than $500 again. Like I said before, how to you eat an elephant? ONE BITE AT A TIME. I can do this.

Done and DONE! 21 months ago

I finally did it! This is a huge freeing moment for me, as this card was once maxed out at $2,500 3 years ago when I first moved to Boston (rather, it became maxed out while I moved to Boston without having a job!). I remember getting the statement month after month while hoping for someone to hire me just so I wouldn’t have to continue paying the minimum and then using a separate card to buy groceries.

Well, work bonuses and tax refunds have been going towards paying off my debt – at once spread across all my cards, but then I decided I needed to cram down and FOCUS. Well, the final straw was an unexpected bonus at work for being “employee of the quarter”. The bonus helped, but I did have to kick in an extra $100 or so of my regular cash to do it…. but, TA DA.

I can’t wait for my next statement to come and the balance to say ZERO. Oh yeah. Of course there are more credit cards that I need to now focus on paying off, but I know it’s not that difficult to do it now!

My motivation for putting this on my list... 2 years ago

... between credit cards and student loans, I have an insane amount of debt. Since I’m not rolling in dough I know the only way I will be able to tackle this debt is in little bits, once piece at a time.

Of my 3 credit cards, 2 of them have balances I consider “do-able”. Meaning, less than $2,000 but more than $1,000 so it is a bit of a challenge. One of those two has 0% APR so no sense in trying hard to pay that off since it’s theoretically not costing me anything.

I’ve always had this as a goal, but I’ve lost sight … meaning I will pay a little more than minimums on all my cards, instead of focusing that extra money on the one card I am trying to pay off.

I also have forgotten my log-in information to my online account to this one … so my first step will be to figure that out so I can pay a little bit each week when it is in the budget.

Halfway to Credit Card Debt Freedom! 2 years ago

I finished paying off one of my two credit cards this week. Yay! It was a balanced I’d started about two years ago and kept swapping around to low APR cards, and now it’s gone!
Then, I switched my other credit card over to this low APR, so there is one card left.
It feels really good to be halfway free.

this entry to just pay off one of my credit cards b/c if I do both of them by June, I won’t have enough saved up for Australia, and that’s more important right now.

This is finally happening 2 years ago

About a month ago I had $6300 in debt, and now I have $5300! I’m whittling away at the best speed I can.
In six weeks we’ll move back to Ohio to stay with Aaron’s mom, and then I’ll save over $500/month on rent, and then I’ll blow the credit card debt away!

    more debt 3 years ago

Ha, ha. Right before the wedding I got another credit card to transfer some balance, and quickly I added more purchases, and now I have more debt than ever! Go, me!
