I built a rocket as a youth group activity when I was 10. While I don’t remember anything about the actual rocket construction, I do remember taking my time painting it to look amazing. Black, yellow, and red were my choice rocket colors, and I’m considering a repeat. I’d really like to build a rocket again! I remember being really pleased with myself when it went off, and I’m still impressed that I actually did it. So I’d like to do it again. And more than once. Maybe I’ll work on 5 rockets to fire off all at the same time. Fun!
This might be a good summer hobby goal…
How to build a model rocket
How I did it: I got a kit (the Estes brand 'Yankee'), and consulted with the store owner about what else I needed.
I spent a few hours one weekend building the rocket. I let the glue dry for about 2 days, then painted it. I launched the following weekend. It would be a great project with a kid, since there are really good directions, parts that favor little hands, and none of the steps are dangerous, except using a razor blade to cut the fins, and the actual launching.
Lessons & tips: I was especially pleased with the quality and clarity of the instructions.
You need:
* the model kit
* the launch pad and rod assembly
* the engines with the wires and plug
* either a launch controller (box with wires ending in alligator kit) or the DIY-approach (18-guage wire, a 9V battery and some common sense)
The launch pad assembly was certainly the expensive part, but you can't fake it. Either follow good directions carefully to build your own or buy/borrow one. It can be used indefinitely and for many different kinds.
I used Elmer's school glue and rubber cement, and it worked fine.

bnutmeg looking forward to some unremarkable weekends and making headway!
Kit acquired. Construction underway. Glue on lateral stabilizer #1 drying. Seems a good time to break for lunch.
