You need to preserve the silence but alsorotect the silence – which to me sounds like it will come by not fearing that it will be broken but by owning the silence… 14 months ago

raslaliqueThe Big Silence

I saw this BBc documentary a few months called “The Big Silence”. It was about some people who decided to investigate the effect silence would have on their lives. They spent two weeks at a monastery in silence for most of the day and when they returned home they made time for silence in their daily lives.

The effects on their lives were phenomenal! I have been attempting on and off (and rather poorly at that) to incorporate silence in my life. I am challenged by my former lack of self-discipline and by the fact that my neighbourhood isn’t “quiet” by any stretch of the imagination.

For the past 3 days I have been slowly easing my way in by having daily 15 minute stretches of silence. it is really profound. Things come to me that I would never have even thought about consciously when I am in silence. The few times I decided to eat without any distractions I realised I needed less than half of what I was eating to be full and I was fully aware of what items tasted good and which ones were not well done. 16 months ago
