How to buy a macbook pro

How I did it: Wasn't too hard. My budget was within a few hundred of what I spent on my PC laptop (a 15.4" HP Pavilion dv6500t with 2GB RAM and 120GB hard drive space), so I researched Apple computers that would be in the relative price range and have what I needed. I settled on a 15" Macbook Pro with 4GB RAM and 250GB hard drive space, but even with my student discount it was a little pricey. I ended up surfing third-party sellers and bought one new in the box on ebay for the price I was aiming for. Lessons & tips: I wouldn't expect to find Macs for significantly lower prices than the MSRP. I bid on a few before buying one outright, and my impression is that people will fight tooth and nail for Apple products as a rule. Make sure it's exactly what you want, as with any major purchase, before buying. For people with money and time to burn, Swoopo is an auction site that offers penny auctions on Macs, and I've seen them sell for anywhere from $200-500. However, bids cost $0.60 each, every bid extends the auction a certain number of seconds (and naturally, deluges of bids can extend it for hours), and people there are aggressive bidders. If you are willing to fight that hard for one, it's a good place. I didn't have the patience; too much like gambling to me. My semi-new HP Pavilion died after less than two years. (UGH!!!) And the three separate techies I’ve asked have said it’s not worth replacing, since it’s a motherboard issue—a bit expensive. I’m currently bidding on the latest model of the Pro on ebay. Otherwise, I’ll be at the 5th Avenue store tomorrow to get one from the source. Yay!
