Start writing songs again

I’ve got a few decent half finished songs and a whole bunch of ideas that may or may not go anywhere, but what I’m writing now (disjointed as it is) seems a lot better to me than what I was writing two or three years ago. All my songs used to have the same structure – 4 lines a verse, two or three verses in a row, then a chorus, then 2 or 3 more verses, chorus again, end song – but that’s pretty much out the window. I remember hating that formula but finding it really hard to write any other way. I’m glad I’ve gotten that out of my system, it was really frustrating.

Up until about a year ago I did this a lot. I don’t really know what stopped me. I just figured that I’d gotten into a rut and I’d get out of it eventually. It’s happened before, but never for this long. It’s not that I haven’t tried, I have. It’s just that nothing I come up with sounds good anymore and I don’t feel like finishing something worthless.
