Plant my garden

Spring must be just around the corner 13 months ago

I got two seed catalogs today!

I planted a garden full of interesting heirloom and Asian vegetables, and it was so successful that I didn’t have any time to write about it during the growing season! Special recommendations: purple-podded pole beans, hearts of gold cantaloupe (really a muskmelon, and oh so good), spinach (but make sure you plant it in early spring), and black krim tomatoes (they crack on the outside, but the flavor is amazingly sweet). Also, it helps if you work a lot of composted manure into your garden before planting. The organic stuff not only helps things grow but also gives them a much better flavor than they would have otherwise. The artificial stuff can be a supplement, but it’s no substitute, flavorwise or growth-wise.

Happiness is 18 months ago

corn-on-the-cob, freshly picked from my garden, for supper!!!

P.S. As soon as I find my camera, or borrow one from someone, I’ll post a picture under
THIS goal.

I've been remiss in reporting 20 months ago

that I’ve been enjoying fresh lettuce from my garden for the past week and a half. My second planting is almost ready, too, so until it turns horribly hot, I should have plenty of bunny food.

As far as the weeds go, I’m making major progress on getting rid of them, but I’m not done yet. If I have time to get out there tomorrow (and it doesn’t rain), I might be able to say I’m almost done.

Soggy Garden 20 months ago

It will be a few months days before my garden is dry enough to work in. When it is, I have two things to concentrate on: plant asparagus and (pull all the) WEEDS.

Meanwhile, I have some more herbs to plant. Since I’m going to use planters/pots, I can get started any time instead of having to wait for the soil to dry out.

Green Onions Spotted! 21 months ago

I had just about given up on them, and would have missed them completely, if Dad hadn’t told me they take a long time to come up and look like little tiny hairs. He was right! :-D

Still no sign of any peas, nor of the first or second planting of spinach and carrots. :-(

Progress! 21 months ago

It finally dried up enough from all the spring rain for me to do some more planting:

MORE:
  • lettuce
  • spinach
  • carrots
  • onions
PLUS:
  • yellow squash
  • acorn squash
  • sugar pumpkins
  • jack-o-lanterns
  • sweet corn (Silver Queen)
  • 3 broccoli plants
  • 9 tomato plants (Early Girl)
  • 3 cherry tomatoes (I got these by accident and Gabe is going to plant the rest at his house.)

The peas I planted a couple of weeks ago don’t seem to be coming up. I have another pack, so I might need to replant them. Plus I have some more herbs to plant, just have to figure out where I want them.

P.S. I didn’t seem to have any butternut squash (my FAVORITE) to plant, and I also seem to have run out of room to plant things. So I either need to find some more room and buy some seeds, or just depend on my aunt’s garden, which always has a surplus of butternut.

Planted - 04/26/08 21 months ago
  • sugar snap peas
  • lettuce
  • spinach
  • short row of carrots
  • green onions
  • dill weed
  • parsley
  • oregano
  • chives
  • basil

I still have some onion sets to plant, but I’ll wait and see if the boys want to help me (tomorrow, if it doesn’t rain). They like to help, but lose interest easily, especially with the tiny seeds (which was mostly what I planted today). The onion sets will be just right for them.

It’s too early to plant much else yet – our frost date is (technically) April 15th, but I know better. So in a week or two I’ll plant beans, tomatoes, squash, pumpkins and corn, plus some more carrots and maybe a second batch of spinach and lettuce.

Now that it's been tilled 21 months ago

I might have to get started on this when I get back from the doctor – IF it doesn’t rain.

1. Rake up grass, etc.
2. Plant lettuce, spinach, onion peas, herbs.

WOO HOO!!!

Succession planting is a long, drawn-out process 22 months ago

I suppose I’ll be planting my garden throughout the summer, but I’ll check this one off after I’ve put in the tomato, eggplant, and pepper seedlings. I’ve had such fun fantasizing about the garden over the winter that I feel reluctant to make it a reality, because the actual tasks involved in putting things in the ground are so prosaic compared to my gardening dreams. But I got my act together this weekend and dibbled my fingers in seed starter mix, putting in my five kinds of tomatoes and two kinds, each, of peppers and Asian eggplant. It feels good to have started, even if I am a few weeks late.
