Mr. K and I visited Hoover Dam on our April trip to Las Vegas. It is am amazing piece of engineering. Especially when you consider that it was buit in the 1930’s without the equipment we are accustomed to having today.
We visited it on a Monday, and we were really surprised by the huge amount of tourists there. So we didn’t get to take the tour through the dam. I’d have to say the guidebooks are correct: if you want to take the tour of the dam, you should probably plan your visit for January or February. 10 months ago

Yes, that’s right….the “Top Gun” training program is now located at the U.S. Naval Air Base at Fallon, Nevada. This is about 70 miles east of our house, and we frequently see the fighter jets practicing in formation. And when we are driving near Fallon, the fighter jets are everywhere practicing. It’s extremely cool. 14 months ago

For many years, the “world’s largest shoe tree” stood along the north side of Highway 50 about 125 miles east of Reno. Then, in January of 2011, some “dastardly vandal” cut it down. Now, people have started tossing their old shoes on another cottonwood tree just to the west of the original one. My picture is of the “new” shoe tree.
Here is a Flicker gallery showing pictures of the original shoe tree:
