I watched all of these growing up (Trekkie (yes, ie) family) and really loved them, but in the end there’s really not as much to Star Trek as there is to other SciFi films and books. But for Star Trek, all time favorite is Star Trek IV and next in line is Star Trek VI. II and III are both good, II (Wrath of Khan) famously so, but I just didn’t like Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan that much. The first one was good in it’s own way, but you can definitely feel its age. V was terrible but worth a watch anyway. The combo classic/Next Generation film was terrible – it was an extended Next Generation episode with hype making it seem like an actual combo film. I think I would have enjoyed it more if they hadn’t given it all the hype… or, actually, if they had written a real film bringing the 2 crews together. I barely remember the Next Generation films somehow, although who could forget the borg queen?
I saw the new film and yes, I really loved it… but I made comments all the way through about all the incredible inconsistencies. Kind of like the new Star Wars movies they made all these improbable connections between things b/c as a fan you just get this incredible rise out of recognizing the beginning of something… spoiler warning come on, though, Spock designing the Kobiyashi Maru?? or having a love affair with __ ?? yeah right. :) but it was a really good movie at the same time. haven’t quite figured out how both can be true.

How I did it: A friend of mine owns all the old movies, so I borrowed them from him and watched them in about 1-hour segments each night. It was great pulling out the VCR again and actually having to rewind movies. It was cool seeing how the special effects developed over the course of the series too, from the very cheesy ones in the first movie to rather modern effects in the second last one, and then of course amazing effects in the new movie. I want to know as much about star trek as my husband knows. I feel so left out, can’t understand what he is talking about
I wish there was a neutral option for my opinion of this goal. I don’t think much of ALL the Star Trek movies, but I also don’t feel like I wasted parts of my life to see them. After all, there are only, what, four? Five? Something like that. :)
