learn to smock

want to learn to smock childrens dresses.

I was looking for smocking instructions on the internet and they all involved buying a pleater or pleating dots or already ready garments. I don’t understand because my Momma smocked and she never had any of those things, she used her sewing machine.

I want to learn to do it the Momma did. She gathered it on her machine. Can you help me?

how do i learn? is it hard??

I love smocking and it’s so simple and the look is so elegant. I have a pleater that gathers the pleats but you can also purchase garments already pleated. I have 3 grandchildren and a neighbor with a baby so I get to smock a lot. If I can help anyone with this passion of my, I will gladly try?

I remember she was given a dress that had a smocked front.

I worked at it and learned how to do it. you hafe to make the front of the dress much bigger than it will be later, then with needle and thread, you gather the front all the way across, a million times. It was very interesting.

I can’t remember how to do it now. Does that mean I never really learned it at all?
