Last year I entered in the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon. It is the most prestigious and most televised triathlon there is. The distances are more disproportionate than most triathlons. The swim and run are longer than a typical olympic distance race and the bike is a little shorter. The water was 55 degrees on the day of the race. The most amazing part was jumping off the boat outside the Alcatraz jail. The swim was very dark, wavy, cold and had a strong undertoe. The bike is 27km. Half of the bike was a solid climb and the other half was down hills. The run was a mix of grass, roads and beach for 13km. The Escape from Alcatraz triathlon was the greatest triathlon that I have ever done.

Ive done this … well, not escaped as such. I visited Alcatraz in october 2004. it was really cool … very eerie, and a true sense of desperation seemed locked in its walls. nice day out though and certainly something i would recommend.

I will need to have a goal to get back into shape after having the baby. August seems doable. They let you wear a wetsuit for the swim portion of this triathlon. I’ve never done a triathlon, either. Though you can do just the swim. Hey, got to set big goals…
