I absolutely want to do this before summer’s over. There are some very interesting ones here: http://www.charityguide.org/volunteer/vacations.htm

I am back and still recovering. Everything was wonderful! I highly recommend Brazil. The children I worked with were so sweet. It was fun even though I couldn’t understand most of what they were saying. check out crossculturalsolutions.org if you’re interested in volunteering overseas!
I am leaving for my volunteer vacation in the morning. I am freaking out. Do I have everything packed I need? Do I know enough Portuguese to manage? Did I leave the iron on? Wait, I don’t iron. And it will be fine. I know this. It will be wonderful. I feel this. Here I go….
So I’m getting ready for my flight. I’m aspiring to just take a carryon. I’m packing very light and hoping to by-pass re-checking my bags when for customs. So I was reviewing the whole list of liquids, yes and no. Everything pretty much makes sense, stuff you would expect: toothpaste (yes 3 oz.) lotion (yes 3 oz) mouthwash (yes 3 oz). Then I come to the bottom of the list and it says, Toy Transformer Robots (Yes and Yes, carryon and checked). What the… ? Well, I guess thank goodness, what would I do in Brazil without my toy transformer robots! whew!
So I’ve got my digital camera and I’m thinking I should just go practice with it today. Ya know, so I am a master when I get to Brazil… I am spending a couple extra days on the beach. Did I mention I’m so very excited??
I am waiting for my passport. I did apply four months ago and they said I should have it in June but all the news about passport delays has me worried. I still have a couple months.
I have the opportunity (some friends offerred me some extra money) to go a few days before my volunteer vacation. I have flying to Sao Paulo and Salvador for the volunteer part so I could stay in either place before. Anyone out there know some safe places to stay and safe places to go for a couple of days?
