How I did it: I debated where to spend my 40th and eventually settled on DC. My bday is in early January so weather is always a concern - as are increased holiday fares. But DC is drivable and early Jan is a GREAT time to visit because the crowds are down and the days were sunny.
We went to a few Irish Bars to hear singers. I saw Kermit at the Smithsonian. The exhibition at the Renwick was '40 under 40' - truly appropriate and inspirational.
Jeff and I had a great time and I got the perspective and inspiration to celebrate the start of a new decade.

I booked a hotel in DC – that is where I will be for my birthday. There is lots to do and the weather looks good. It will be great to spend several days with Jeff. Now to identify what I really want to do – get the big things in place and let the rest happen on their own. 4 months ago

I loved Portland ME – it would be a wonderful place to live. Since we visited Maine (a destination that I have long wanted to visit), Jeff suggests Seattle (another destination that I have long wanted to visit). This would depend on 2 things – how successful ABOC is this selling season and what the temps are in Dec/Jan – need to be able to get around without too much of a challenge. 10 months ago

I could take a cruise out of Charleston to the Bahamas – that would be fun – although we have been there and then there is the drive – might as well look at leaving from Miami – not sure about a cruise with just the hubby and me – it isn’t our type of vacation – good with a group. It comes down to $ and weather. DC still seems easy and interesting. 13 months ago

I have been to DC many times to visit friends. And, we have done touristy things several times. But I would love to spend more time in the museums – that doesn’t matter if it is cold. It is easy enough to get to so it could be a contender. 13 months ago

We went to Chicago for my 30th – I want to go somewhere for my 40th (although I should make plans for a really special trip for my 42nd since that is my soul age). I have been brainstorming. I don’t want to go anywhere cold this time – and since my bday is in the winter, that narrows the field. I would love to go to San Antonio but that is a complicated plane trip and I would prefer to go somewhere with fewer layovers. 13 months ago
