I found that I could make my own mala here:

How to make a mala
How I did it: thought I was ordering just beads - but it came completed - so I'm just going to use this one
(and now I need 150 characters or it will not save...................)

Bought one. If I feel like making one in the future, I’ll get the stuff to do it.
Traditional Buddhist Malas have 108 beads. Muslim beads have 99, so the owner can recite the 99 names of G*d. Some people use Chakra beads which are strung in the order of the colours of the Chakras. I bought my first set of beads in October. I did not like the cheap tassel that came on it, so I removed it and added a luxurious new one. Now I am collecting special beads to make a 108 bead Mala to use during meditation. There are many wonderful sites on the ‘net about Malas, their history and uses.
I went to a craft shop in Sheffield yesterday and bought beads, needles and thread, and last night I sat down and made my mala. It has 54 beads, and the tube-shaped ones are intended to be spacers.
I found the instructions on www.thepeacebeads.com and they were very useful.
I was in a shop in Saugerties, NY that sells lots of Tibetan rugs, art, and such. I was looking for a nice wrist mala, but a seed and turquiose full mala jumped out at me. So I got it.
