How I did it: I had wanted to do that for a long time, but it takes a lot of money and it would have taken me years to collect it. I went to Japan as a participant of the International Youth Development Exchange Program organized by Japanese Government. The program was very intense and we all wished to see more of the traditional Japan, but it was still worth going! Read how I did it…
How I did it: two words, my friend: JET Programme. once i met people, i go back to visit every year or so. jtb is a good airfare finder, and JR has passes that are specific to regions, so if you're only going to the east side of the island, don't buy the generic pass (cho~ takai! very expensive!) How I did it: I pretty much just went through my school, North Central College. We have a lot of programs available for studying in Japan, and partly because of the quantity and quality of these programs I decided to take Japanese. I went first in 2006, on a program called China/Japan that spent 2 months in Beijing and 2 months in Kyoto, studying and having fun. There's no language requirement to go on this program, so I would h… Read how I did it…
How I did it: Bought plane tickets, called my family to arrange plans, packed my suitcase, and brought lots of money........Japan is extremely expensive......................... . Read how I did it…

How I did it: Used the tax payers to subsidize my living expenses through the FAFSA and my university. Then I worked a sumer job at minimum wage to pay for my plane ticket. But just one way. And I used loans to pay for my way back which was cheaper. Read how I did it…

I love Japan. The peoepl the food the culture. I speak the language and that makes everything so much better, like you would not believe. The drinking culture is awesome too.
Japan…. its a magical/strange place. when you just think you need a bigger place, it’s just the time you need more space.
Japan comes right in.
I cant even describe the whole experience in a few words. I have traveled in Asia for 3 years but never encountered in a place as beautiful, magical, insane, strange….it was such a strong experience that even after leaving Japan for the first time there was something that kept on pulling me there.
Think of Japan as a beautiful lotus flower with a shade of a Cactus. dont let its culture beauties flash you, it has 2 sides but that’s the whole beauty in this country of extremes.
I strongly recommend going there. Honto-ni Zechi zechi ! (~a must!)
if you want to pick up Japanese do yourself 2 favors:
1) stay away from the big cities and go to random towns where people would be as curious as you and friendly in the most Japanese way. (I even made friends in the Yakuza)
2) dont learn at university or take evening school useless classes since this is totally not how Japanese speak. a better way is just to be there and try learning 4-5 words a day… you’ll be amazed how fast youll be able to speak (dont be lazy)
a nice book called “making out in Japanese” is a great slang book (very useful)
Dont miss out on the Honsens (hot springs ) it is a wonderful experience that you cant get enough of.
Have fun!

I have ALWAYS wanted to visit Japan. Hoping to get there soon :)
Joe and I went last year (Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara) and really loved it. We’d go back but there are so many other places we’ve never been that we’d also like to see.
