Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

- The Robots.

A Staggering Rat of Heartbreaking Something or OtherWell, and here we are.

This may have been the most heartfelt, sweetest and even sexiest gift of all – certainly something you’d always wanted. It was trust. The nice thing about trust is that it was indeed a gift.
You can do whatever you want with it. You can cherish it. You can deserve it. You can offer it yourself. You can look it in the mouth. You can even squander it.

But there was no doubt of its sincerity, from me to you. Happy birthday month to you, dear Mr. Sunshine. 2 years ago

A Staggering Rat of Heartbreaking Something or OtherHere is the next best thing to a banana split.

A man and his bull terrier are on safari in Africa. The bull terrier wanders off in the jungle and before long, discovers he is lost. Suddenly he catches sight of a leopard heading his way with the obvious intention of having him for lunch.

The bull terrier thinks “Merde alors, I’m done for.” Then he notices some bones on the ground close by and quickly grabs one to chew on. Just as the leopard is about to leap, the bull terrier belches and announces “Man, that was one delicious leopard. I wonder if there are any more around here.”

Hearing this, the leopard halts his attack in mid-stride. A look of terror comes over him and slinks away into the jungle. “Bloody hell,” says the leopard. “That was close. That bull terrier nearly had me.”

Meanwhile, a monkey has been watching everything from a nearby tree. He figures he can put his knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So, off he goes. But the bull terrier sees him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figures that something must be up.

The monkey catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself. The leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says “Here, monkey, hop on my back and watch what happens to that bull terrier!”

The bull terrier sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back and thinks “What am I going to do now?” But instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn’t seen them yet and, just when they get close enough to hear, says

“Where’s that blasted monkey? I sent him off half an hour ago to bring me another leopard.”2 years ago

A Staggering Rat of Heartbreaking Something or OtherAnd so

we approach the end of Birthday Month. Almost.

I said this eve before good night Tell me how it’s going to be.
He did, and I smiled, said – do you remember what I said? I said – Then let’s always be like that. It’s important to me.

I think it is a most honourable combination platter. 2 years ago

Epic SunshineWell!

A very successful birthday it has been! Thank you all, and thank you Rat.

Slow dancing in the living room to Frankie Laine’s That Lucky Old Sun is a HUGE thing, pure, epic genius, spot on. Darling, I love you.

The evening out, at Mangia Qui and elsewhere too. Absolutely perfect and for a lifetime. The full days of joy and happiness and hands held tight and so much more….whatta birthday!

There were so many, perfect, sweet, wonderful moments this past week.
It’s great to be me at this age, and to receive the encouragement to be more of me, and to treat all of me well, is a grand gift. You gave me the best of clothing, personal care, diet, exercise, music, intellectual pursuits of literature, art and ideas/philosophy. And great love. I learned that I am greatly and perfectly loved, deep, wide, all. It is a gift of a lifetime.

I love her, too, this way, and as much.

We have no limits. Never will. I truly am that lucky old sun. (Now Youtube the song, pull me tight, close your eyes and I’ll whisper It’s later while we dance. 2 years ago

Todd SchoonoverHappy Belated Birthday

Damn those missing notifications because I’m quite tardy on adopting and completing this goal. At least Ratty has turned this into a month instead of one day since Epic is currently unable to access his account. He’s actually talking about starting another account, which would be his third since he deleted during the buttongate scandal too. Hopefully though the Robots will be in touch and fix his issues so that he can get back in his account before having to create a new one. In the meantime here are my wishes for him for the coming year:

May he (and we all) have less to worry about the right wing as the fringe gets trimmed this fall. May he Yen instead of being franc since the Euro sets the peso. And may his bladder be full enough to simulate Niagara Falls. 2 years ago

A Staggering Rat of Heartbreaking Something or OtherSong and Merriment!

I picked Leonard Cohen as the birthday party’s virtual concert headliner. What’s not to love about Leonard Cohen? Everything he writes sounds wry and arch and impending. He has a voice like Scotch.

Mr. Sunshine will say “And he’s Canadian, eh.”

Quick, Mr. Sunshine, let me pull you to dance before Closing Time.2 years ago

A Staggering Rat of Heartbreaking Something or OtherNational Epic Doughnut Day

(at some point I will revert to Canadian spelling) has come and gone. “What did you wind up getting?” I asked Mr. Sunshine, who bought a sharable six-pack.
“I had a mutter mutter mutter,” he said.
“Whazzat? Maple?”
“No, no maple. They had a blueberry cake donut, but I didn’t have that.”

That was yesterday. I forget what he had. I don’t think it sounded like the best donut in the world. It wasn’t maple or cake. So I googled “best donut in the world” and then “best doughnut in the world”.
I hit PAY DIRT! It isn’t a chain of donut shops like Tim’s. It’s one place in New York and it sells what looks like the world’s most perfect doughnut.
Research is necessary. Must study. 2 years ago

tikini wikini Presents? Did someone say dancing?

Where? Where? Epic wishes to Epic Sunshine! Happy Dancing. Songs, cake, whip cream. Chocolate!

Your birthday season has brought eclipses – both moon and sun – and transit of Venus. Perhaps you felt the tides change.

For your birthday here is a turquoise beach with an elegant shadow. Much happiness and aloha! 2 years ago

A Staggering Rat of Heartbreaking Something or OtherI like his presence.

“Mmmm, presents,” he said.

Yeah, yeah, I’ll get to that. 2 years ago

A Staggering Rat of Heartbreaking Something or OtherJune 1st is National Doughnut Day

I said to Mr. Sunshine, “This is no coincidence. We’ll have to do something about that.” He said “Oh! Coolness! I would love a retroactive doughnut or so. And did you know I found a pint of Philly Graham ice cream for you?”
“Wha – whu – WHAT?!”
It is unusual for Virgos to be distracted. We are sometimes distractions ourselves. I like to think it occurs when we wear shiny things.. 2 years ago

A Staggering Rat of Heartbreaking Something or OtherI said "Virgos

are unapologetically listy. Make a list.”
(That’s a nice twist, innit, I thought.)
He did. With another twist: “Now you add to it.”

Well, I never. 2 years ago

A Staggering Rat of Heartbreaking Something or Other"How that SEE FOOD got into my pyjamas, I'll never know."

I have been thinking of a potato chip taco ever since I met up with a taco in a dorito shell at a fast-food jernt. My thinking involves a good layer of kettle chips, a scoop of ho-made potato salad (no eggs), and another layer of kettle chips. This sounds like the basis of a picnic, I said.
Mr. Sunshine heartily agreed: And here I am, in the potato chip capital of the world!

The birthday week picnic is shaping up to look something like this:
grilled things, like General Tso burgers or ribs
ho-made potato salad tacos
banana splits, after dancing
a good prosecco (you know, as much as I hate the paternalism of the LCBO, it does weed out the things like “fine champagne mixed with pure chocolate milk” that you see in US liquor stores)

banana splits after dancing – some of us wait a lifetime for that! 2 years ago

A Staggering Rat of Heartbreaking Something or OtherMr. Sunshine is technically AWOL

because the site is AWRY and he cannot even SIGN IN. He is at the mercy of robot assistance. But he is happily basking in the attentions of fellow 43Ters who are extending birthday wishes: “I want very much to thank my friends in a timely manner.”

Today, he told me that after some deliberation, he decided he will be enjoying a SEE FOOD platter for birthday dinner. Ah, I said. I know this one. So, after you SEE FOOD and eat it, you can play the piano?

It was over the phone, but I can tell when he is giving me a looooong look. 2 years ago

BeeQ, hangin round the 43'hood since 2006Wellllllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope its been sunny and stellar, for you are most deserving of a special birthday, and I wish for you that your next rotation round the earth continues to bring abundance, joy, love, laughter, and really good food.

I haven’t tried the first recipe but want to. The second one, is bar none, the best mac n’ cheese I have ever had/made…ever! Course, I put my own spin on it, which I can’t divulge coz then I’d have to kill you, and Rat is very fond of you, as are the rest of us, and I’d be doing the world a grave disservice should I have to take you out for knowing my culinary secrets….but I digress….HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Many blessings!

A Staggering Rat of Heartbreaking Something or OtherI stayed up late so I could do this!

Happy birthday, my dear Mr. Sunshine!

What would my mornings be like without your warmth and light? And afternoons, should I not find you beaming upon me? And what of evenings, long nights unthinkable without a perfect dance atop the Eiffel Tower until daybreak?

Today and every day I wish you happiness; rosesuponthenightstand; an endless waltz; enchiladas set in a warming oven for at least an hour; attic finds and vials; a hundred great white candles burning bright; thunderstorms on the horizon; curtains billowing at the windows; love poems tucked into your shoes; shared burritos; walks hand in hand; one glass; a garden of senses past, present and future; driving boots; stolen chunks of the swishy-tailed, gently lowing variety; four rings of devotion… ah… so much more… it is late and the drift of sleep beckons. But I’ll be back with more in the morning. Many happy returns, o beloved. Many happy returns! 2 years ago

A Staggering Rat of Heartbreaking Something or OtherI have song and merriment,

and oh, who wouldn’t love a waltz under the bright wavy-glass moon! 2 years ago

A Staggering Rat of Heartbreaking Something or OtherI am fond of

Mr. Sunshine because I can tell he’s grinning as he writes things. I can tell he’s grinning as he speaks. The grin is right in his voice.
I can tell he’s grinning as he reads, too.

I have a few surprises in mind for his birthday. I sense a grin so big right now it rivals the Cheshire Cat. 2 years ago
