I am an overweight smoker, who has never been interested in sports or anything that could slightly cause a sweat! However, when I got into volunteering for organizations that raise awareness for the horrible issue of child sex trafficking, I knew I would do anything for the cause to make a difference… even if that included running in a 5k. :) After some prayer for strength, I actually finished the 5k in 13 minutes, 27 seconds. Not impressive to most, but to a girl who couldn’t run the mile in the 30 minute gym class… it was an accomplishment to me and to the cause who later raised $17,000 to the prevention and aftercare of children abused in the sex trafficking industry.

I walked the Race for Life, an event here in the UK in support of Cancer Research UK. Two years ago, I tried to walk the 5K route, but couldn’t even make it to the 1K marker!
Since then, I’ve lost about 70 pounds and have taken up Nordic Walking. On Sunday, August 15, I was able to walk the 5K circuit in approximately 57 minutes.
I felt a tremendous sense of accomplishment for reaching a fitness goal and also got quite a buzz from raising money for charity.

The Saturday before Mother’s Day my friends and I along with our moms walked the Race for the Cure 5k in Atlanta. It was an amazing experience. First off, it didn’t really seem as long as I thought it would be. The first mile I wanted to quit and cheat like other people were doing and cut down a side road, but we perservered and after that it was a really easy walk. I learned that it really irritates to walk with other people all around me. It was extremely crowded and it was hard to just enjoy yourself and walk. At the same time though, it was amazing that this many people came out to support breast cancer research. I don’t know anyone that has ever had cancer, and so I didn’t know that breast cancer had touched so many lives. The breast cancer survivors were so inspiring to see finishing the race. It was an awesome experience and I cannot wait to do another 5k, hopefully I will be jogging the next.

I am researching the 3-day breast cancer walk in October 2007 for Atlanta – that is more than a 5k though. But it would accomplish two goals in one (charity and walking). So I’m now looking for a real 5-k (maybe the one two months from now in my hometown). If I make that one, then I’ll sign up next year for the 3-day.

What a wonderful goal! I live in Arkansas and head up a walk/run clinic called “Women Can Run Arkansas”. We volunteer two days a week to teach women to walk or run a 5k race that we host in Conway, AR at the end of the clinic. It is a wonderful organization and the participation has been phenominal! It’s wonderful to see the happiness in women’s eyes when they accomplish goals way beyond their own expectations, and the encouragement that is given by all the participants is inspiring to say the least. Here is a run down on our twice weekly routines. Maybe you can incorporate these in to your own training: All rountines start with light stretching and a 5 minute brisk walk to warm up. Week 1, walk rapidly 1 min. walk slow for 4, Continue for 30 min. Week 2, walk rapidly 2 min, walk slow 3 min, continue for 30 min. Week 3, walk rapidly 3 min., walk slow 2 min, continue for 30 min. Week 4, walk rapidly 4 min., walk slow 1 min, continue for 30 ,min. Week 5, walk rapidly 5 min, walk slow 1 min, continue for 30 min. Week 6, walk rapidly 6 min, walk slow 2 min, continue for 32 min. Week 7, Walk rapidly 7 min, walk slow 3 min., continue for 30 min., Week 8, walk rapidly 8 min, walk slowly 2 min, continue for 30 min, week 9, walk rapidly 9 min, walk slowly 1 min, continue for 30 min. Week 10, walk rapidly for 30 min. Cool down after each workout and then light stretching. Try to do at least two to three days a week. You’ll be in prime shape for that 5k in no time!

I walked 2 1/2 miles today at the YWCA. It took 50 minutes, I’ll need to work on speed.

i did the AIDS foundation walk in irvine, and i felt so good.
however, it definately would have been better with at least one of the following:
- a buddy (mine ditched out at the last minute)
- decent shoes (scarred heels tell all)
- music (forgot the ipod)
but it really was awesome, and i was able to raise $800 for a wonderful cause.
