"It was impossible for me not to do, given the amount of interest I have in the subject."
How I did it: If you are like me and find microorganisms to be captivating creatures, and have studied up on them simply for the purpose of your own enjoyment, this class should be a breeze. It helps, of course, to have excellent professors such as I had. (For both the lecture and the lab). I ended up with mine totally by chance, but the general concensus was that they were pretty awesome and well liked, even by the people that werent doing so well in the course.
I dont want to give the appearance that I floated through the course. It actually did take a lot of studying and extra time in the lab for me to make those A's. When I say that it was impossible for me to not get A's because of my interest in the subject, I really mean there was no way I would let myself accept anything else.
Lessons & tips: The hardest part of the lecture for me was basic biology stuff. Electron acceptors, RNA & DNA, encryption, meiosis, mitosis, etc. If you have already taken biology (which I havent), this probably wont be difficult for you. I took detailed notes in class, highlighted any terms I wasnt familiar with, wrote down definitions and had my friend quiz me repeatedly.
For lab, the hardest part was the chemistry (which I also havent taken yet). It was easy for me to remember easy stuff like color changes & reactions and what they meant for my "unknown" bacteria in particular, but remembering all of those end products was pretty difficult, and was compounded by the fact that I had lost my lab text at the very beggining of the semester. Luckily my professor was a very patient woman and went over things repeatedly in the classroom. But really, try not to leave your textbook in the bathroom when you go to take a pee. Its an 80 dollar text and you may not have the cash to buy another... thats my advice.
