The greatest achievement is selflessness.
The greatest worth is self-mastery.
The greatest quality is seeking to serve others.
The greatest precept is continual awareness.
The greatest medicine is the emptiness of everything.
The greatest action is not conforming with the worlds ways.
The greatest magic is transmuting the passions.
The greatest generosity is non-attachment.
The greatest goodness is a peaceful mind.
The greatest patience is humility.
The greatest effort is not concerned with results.
The greatest meditation is a mind that lets go.
The greatest wisdom is seeing through appearances.

I’ve found myself a lovely little sangha, and every Sunday while I’m in Bangalore, I go meet them. It’s been a pleasure, and I feel much more connected to these beliefs than I ever had before.

It was sort of worth it, if understood as a part of my journey toward a more true truth – that of Christianity. I was a teenage Buddhist. Reading the Bible story brought about a cataclysmic, wonderful conversion, though.

For most of us who are not full-time monks or nuns, practice is what we need more of. Practice helps us attain more. Reading and attending dharma talks are both good, of course, and very educational. But I do not want to be a “bookstore Buddhist.”
I want to make more time in my life for the practice of Buddhism.
My teacher would probably say “Just do it.”
It’s the hardest thing. It’s the easiest thing. Just sit on the cushion. Yes, it’s the easiest thing in the whole world. Only sit.

Last year I dedicated myself to this path while recovering from my breakdown. Now I am stressed and realize I should have been doing more meditations and dealing than hiding and ignoring life. I am making my space tonight so I have no excuses not to meditate.

I left the catholic church 20 years ago and spent much of that time trying to find my place…instead I found my path. This path has helped me to realize that outside of me is a world of need, I was just too self-absorbed to know.
