RaeSpring is here! That means allergies, flying insects and gardening!

I added this goal Fall of last year as part of another goal to list at least one new goal every week. I didn’t want these goals to be arbitrary so I made sure to include things I wanted to do, but for whatever reason(s) (or excuses) I either never made the time for, or just didn’t put forth the initiative to do, but were things I’ve always wanted to do or experience. So I chose gardening. Well actually, growing something and keeping it alive for 30 days.

At the time I was hoping to start a vegetable garden, but after some careful consideration, I didn’t think it would be practical for a first time gardener to attempt such a task. I’ve never been able to successfully sprout a seedling, let alone a full garden. So I decided to try my hand instead on growing a single plant, preferably a small indoor flower of some kind. An orchid? Maybe a fern?

Now that Spring has arrived (I miss Winter already…) it’s time to get started working towards this goal. But instead of growing orchids and ferns, I’ve decided to grow herbs. They’re small and simple so they should be fairly easy to grow, right? I’ve looked at a number of grow kits at Lowes and Home Depot, and they don’t seem all that complicated. So I’ll start with one or two of those, and advance to something a little harder in 2 months or so. By next year I want to be able to plot an entire herb garden. Maybe even throw in a few vegetables and a fruit tree while I’m at it. But we’ll see. For now I’m going to focus on a small portable herb garden. One that I can move easily indoors and out as needed. My office doesn’t offer much sunlight, depending on the sun’s position in the sky relative to the trees in the backyard. I could use the kitchen window, but that would mean positioning the herbs above the sink. But even that option only allows for limited sunlight as well. The other side of the house is in perpetual shade due to the trees and shrubbery.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice, it would be GREATLY appreciated. Again, I’m only growing herbs, and I know it shouldn’t be complicated, but I want to make the most and best of this experience. There’s a lot I don’t know about gardening, and I certainly want to learn. I’m eager to learn!

I’m looking to buy the seedlings and supplies over the weekend, and get started early next week. Wish me luck! And may God have mercy on the seedlings that will be subjected to my very un-green thumb, lol. 1 month ago

CharlyHmmh...

I had a greenhouse about 2 years ago but I forgot about it for a month or two and, when I returned, it had been completally taken over by a grape-vine which I’m pretty sure hadn’t even been in the greenhouse. Anyway, you cant even get in there now so I’ve opted to grow something in my bedroom to fit in with the ‘zen’ look I’ve got going.
What could I grow? Maybe a bonsai tree?

Suggestions are more than welcome!:) 4 months ago
