How to learn Hungarian
How I did it: I lived in Hungary for a few years. Watched a lot of TV, read the newspaper and listened to people speaking IRL. I did not really use any language books other than a dictionary. I would say I understand a majority of what I see and hear now, though my ability to express myself in the language is not as good as my ability to comprehend it.
Lessons & tips: The best way is complete immersion, but if you can't do that it helps to know someone who speaks the language & listen to them. Or watch Hungarian movies with & without subtitles.

My dad’s mom is hungarian and he had attempted to teach us it but we found it useless. Wish we actually made a point to learn it. I will ask one of his mom’s sister to helpe learn it. Then I will surprise my dad and his mom what i have learned.
if you want to talk to me and improve your skills, just send a msg to me. I will help you to learn hungarian :)
It’s my other native language (well, should be), so I guess it’s time to learn…

Just came back from a 10-day holiday in Hungary and picked up a few words and have a slightly better understanding of pronunciation and features of the language, definitely going to go again so will persevere with this goal! :D

Well I am Hungarian and it’s really hard and unbearable to not be able to talk to my dozens of cousins and other relatives just because I grew up in the USA.
My step dad is Hungarian so we go to visit his family every summer. And we might move there so I want to learn the language.

My Grandad is Hungarian and so I’ve always been interested in his native language and wanted to learn it. Haven’t had chance to learn much recently because I’ve been at university and been too busy as a result, but will be finished tomorrow and have some time to learn! Going to Hungary this month too, so will emmerse myself in the language there, although I did buy a very useful book called “Teach Yourself Hungarian” by Zsuzsa Pontifex. It does have accompanying CDs to help you understand spoken Hungarian and I would reccommend it to anyone wanting to learn the language (there’s a whole series of “Teach Yourself..” books for different languages too) – good luck to others also wanting to learn this unique language! :D

zavanna asks,
“I really want to learn Hungarian! But I don't see many other people wanting to learn it, and I'd like to learn it with other people. Should I just get a CD-ROM or something, or should I look for some sort of night college thing?”
