I can’t believe I took on this entry almost a year and a half ago and have not learned to do this yet.
Shame on me!
Don’t tell him I told you this, but my husband knows how to thread sewing machines . . . and how to sew, for that matter. He claims he took a class in sewing back in the day thinking he’d be a lifetime bachelor hohoho.
I’m going to bug him to show me how. (I learn better by watching and imitating than by reading instructions.)

and it varies by the sewing machine in quetion.
you feel like a failure when you end up winding bobbins by hand
But once you dive in and read the simple to understand manual and then fill in the necessary step they inexplicably left out…
voilla!

I’ve been stagnant on my goal of “learn to sew.” I think I have been trying to learn too fast or too much all at once, so I’m breaking that goal down into smaller ones.
I read a few sewing books, but they just confused me more. They seemed written for people who at least knew something about sewing; I went in knowing nothing beyond what “thread” and “needles” are. I didn’t know many, many terms used in the books (the books had no glossaries; what’s with that!?). I did look up all the words I didn’t know, but the meanings didn’t make much sense to me.
For smaller goals to lead up to the bigger one of being able to sew, I’m starting with the basics of operating a sewing machine. So far: I can turn on my sewing machine. (Woooweee.)
Before I can sew even the most basic stitch, I need to thread the machine. It’s not as easy as it might sound, at least not for me. I’ve tried, but have not yet been able to successfully complete it.
I am going to devote a little time each day to trying to thread the machine until I can do it, then keep practicing threading it until I can do it sufficiently well.
