I decided I don’t want a telecommuting job any more, I want to work from home on my own terms instead. And I think I know how I’m going to do it – by helping others to do the same thing. There’s going to be a whole load of people looking to do bits and pieces of work online and I’ve found a service which is going to make it easier for freelancers to find small contracts globally in all sorts of areas of work. The service is called pajamanation and it’s still free to register up until March 15th 2007 at http://www.pajamanation.co.uk Sign up, have a look at what’s available and imagine the potential – then tell me what you think.

I’ve decided this is a longer term goal… for 3-5 years time. My current decison is based on the job that i’ve just accepted which I can walk to from home, and is really good. (I had a big turn around the other week and was headhunted to do this different job to the one that I was originally going to accept, which had travel involved and that I wouldn’t have been able to walk to) So I’m very pleased .. even though the new job is still in London
Not feeling very sure about how stressful it’s going to be.. and I’m having to get there by tube train every day, as it’s not practical to get there anyother way.. which is in direct contradiction of my goal not to travel on the tube. AND I don’t think they are paying me enough money :-(
My goal is to be at home 2-3 days a week, and in the office the rest of the time; the company should theoretically support this.. just need to see what happens in practice :-)
I’m very lucky. I have a great job, reasonably well paid (enough for my modest means (!)), and I get to work from home too. It gives me a great work/life balance. I lived in and around London for 10 years, commuting on the tube. Now I can’t imagine doing that for 10 days, let alone ten years! Yes, it helps if you’re with a company and then persuade them to let you work from home. And in my case, I took a step down the corporate ladder to be able to do it. But very very worth it, in my opinion!
It’s a great job… but it will take me away from home all over the country one or two days a week.. and definitely doesn’t involve working from home. grrr. but it’s a good job.. plenty of variety, good company, possibilities for promotion etc etc grrr.
One tactic at the moment is to find big organisations with good HR policies, find an office job with them, then ‘convert’ it to a telcommuting job.. for at least a couple of days a week
Is the best way to do this is to work for a company first and persuade them to let you work from home ? No one seems to advertise senior jobs that are home based. I just typed telecommute into jobserve for IT jobs, and go no results. Same with telework. Remote brings up a few matches – but only for support jobs.
I think the first issue is to figure out how to do your job remotely. I’m struggling with this one as I have a lot of management tasks which require discussions and meetings.
