    challenge 3 months ago

So, I’ve decided to challenge myself to this. I want to have this completed by the end of this year. I don’t have a set “amount” or number of items to have…I just feel like when I’ve downsized enough, I will know. I’d like to minimize my belongings, and continue to have minimal belongings. I feel like a lot of the things I have are unnecessary, and I don’t like having things laying around, taking up space if I don’t absolutely need them. I’m also hoping to move out of my parents house when I graduate in the spring, so having less items to move out will make things a lot easier.

I cleaned my room again this weekend. I managed to get rid of some old notes I was saving that I really don’t need to hold onto anymore. I have some old text books that can’t be bought back, but I am going to hold them because I believe there is a text book donation drive of some sort in the fall, and I’d hate to just throw them out. This process is going to take awhile, but for now I feel like I’ve accomplished something in working towards this goal.

I always feel like I am purging 6 months ago

I have too much crap. Everytime I clean my room, I manage to get rid of stuff. But even after that, I feel like I still have too much crap. Part of the problem is, if something is still in good shape and I can’t find somebody to give it away to, I feel wasteful throwing it out. Or, I think I may need it again soon, and so I hold on to it.
I’ve started a new rule in that if I keep something because I think I am going to use it, and then don’t within a month or two, I get rid of it. Even so, I still feel like I have too much stuff. I guess this is going to be a process.
Besides having too much stuff, I also don’t have a place for everything. I am always moving things around. I think if I reduce the amount of things I own, I’ll be able to find a spot for everything.

I cleaned my house on Sunday and yesterday, and it looks so good! A clean house makes me very happy, although getting the motivation to actually get it that way escapes me often! I also rearranged my bathroom, bedroom and laundry room. Got rid of more stuff that I never need or even look at. The more junk that I clear out, the happier and more relaxed I am. It’s a great feeling! I can actually see the progress I am making now.

I love having the freedom to just pick up and leave if I choose to do so. I used to have very few things, which was great when I was moving around alot. Now that I’ve been stuck in Orlando for the last 6 years, I’ve started amassing things again, and I’m not too happy about this. I just lost my job, so that was the catalyst that really got me selling my stuff, and thinking more honestly about what I need, and what I don’t. I plan on being out of Florida again by May 2010 at the very latest, so by then, I plan on whittling my stuff down to less than 1/4 of what I have now.

so much junk! 20 months ago

I have so much rubbish that I’ve bought over the years but I’m really sick of it now. A lot of things I have are sentimental but I’ve always liked the idea of just having a few personal things just so I could pick up and leave at any given time. I’m gonna try and sort things out this week!

How much is too much (little)? 2 years ago

I have stuff, it’s not alot but I want to get rid of it none the less. I used to have more and have since given it away or left it at my parents house. Presently I live with a girlfriend and she owns all the stuff I don’t want to. I don’t own any furniture save a ladder desk and a lap desk. I own a laptop, a radio, an ipod, a car, a surfboard some clothes and shoes. I have a small box of cd’s and books, a tool box of tools for bicycles, a beach cruiser and a cell phone. Oh yeah I also have a box for my documents such as bills, diplomas, passports, and tax documents. As I see it all I want is Clothes, obviously, my surfboard, beach cruiser, laptop, ipod and cellphone and also my luggage. I am trying to get rid of everything else. My goal is to only own 10 objects, I count clothes as one object and all the rest as one object. My username dedicated to this objective. Anyway I should probably end this here.
