How to homeschool my children
How I did it: I went down to the school board and signed a waver stating I was going to homeschool my son. For our family this wasn't something that I could just do and we all had to be on the same page. The first year we worked with a curriculum and allowed our son to pick the direction of his learning. The second year we did more of an unschooling approach. This year our son turned 9 and is in his 4th year of homeschooling and I have returned to work full time and my husband does the main academics.
It's been a heck of an experience and a lot of trial and error, but once you find your groove, it's a rewarding experience!
Lessons & tips: Don't push too hard: This is a big one. Homeschooling can be catered to what you want and what your children needs. It took us a long time to realize that we didn't have to teach the same way that the public schools were doing it.
Stay on top of yearly lessons: In case your child needs to go back to public school at some point, keep in mind what they would be learning in the public school setting and keep them on par.
Know the rule in your state: Keep a journal or log of what you do and make sure what you are doing is considered legal in your state so you don't run into problems later.
Resources: Local homeschooling groups and yahoo :)

willowlynn2 doing pretty well actually
This isn’t a goal that I’ll be able to move to “finished” any time soon because it’s an ongoing process and something I need to keep doing every day and most days to keep reminding myself why. My 5yr old is learning to read and doing well with math which is awesome! She LOVES science so I try to do an experiment of some type about once a week. My 3yr old is getting more comfortable with his letters and he picks up a lot of things as he’s running around bouncing off my walls.
The most important accomplishment to me so far has been that my husband has finally come around on this. He never said he didn’t want me to, but he did say he wanted them in school at some point preferable right after first grade. Now, that he’s sees it’s working and he’s convinced that I’m committed to our children learning, he’s come around a lot. He says so long as it’s working, and they’re not falling grossly behind in any thing then he’s content with me teaching them until I don’t want to do it anymore. This is amazing!!!
Casey is making a list
I am really interested in the homeschool co-op idea. I would love to meet some other parents who are passionate about a particular thing and have a few kids make the rounds through several parents.
I was Googling it, and found a Durham meetup group, so I signed up!

I was a really smart kid who was not challenged in school. I remember finishing work in a minute and sitting there waiting 15 for the rest of the class, with nothing to do.
I don’t want this for my kids.
It doesn’t matter how smart they are, so much of school is bullshit wasting time, waiting around while others learn.
I want my kids to EXPERIENCE learning in a powerful way. I want them to learn how to learn and how to love learning.
When I told my husband what I wanted to do, he thought I was joking. I understand. I get frustrated sometimes with our kids (3 year old twins!) but everyone does. The thing I love most is doing projects with them and teaching them how to think and reason and observe. I want the freedom to take them to the lake for the day to learn about ecology, to the museum to learn science…
I’m scared that if I start it, I might peter out and not want to continue for the rest of the year. I think I might start with kindergarten and see how it goes.
Any advice on getting organized? Resources?
Maybe I’ll try it for kindergarten
Currently I’m in school getting my teaching certificate so that I can teach high school science, and now that I’ve done some of my student teaching, it is so obvious to me how public schools are failing our kids. And it’s like, I could be the best teacher in the world, and I still can’t be the best teacher for each individual kid, because every kid has different needs! There’s just no way to win with public school, which is why I don’t plan on sending my (future) children there (although I do believe it’s a combined decision with both parents and child and homeschooling isn’t for everyone).
I suppose if my future mate is opposed to homeschooling, and we make enough money, I wouldn’t mind putting my kids into a Montessori private school, because I really believe in their philosophy. Otherwise, I think homeschooling is extremely do-able at many different income levels, especially with the support of homeschooling co-ops. I’m willing to make all kinds of sacrifices if necessary to make it work, because it really is that important to me.
And wow! 31 out of 31 people think this is worth doing! That’s pretty good odds right there. :D
fugitive247 is grateful.
My two boys each have very distinct educational needs which our small rural school district cannot accommodate. There are no charter schools in this region and IEPs seem to be a bad joke at my kids’ expense. I won’t go into the laundry list of other reasons public school has consistently been a disservice to these children.
My son is only 1 but I hope to be able to homeschool, or even unschool, him. The conventional system of schooling is broken. Children are conditioned to hate learning, and curiosity is crushed.
Yes, I’m even contemplating customizing my degree for that specific purpose. All my other career goals can do without a college education.
