i will find a place to practice. i was thinking maybe i can find some secluded open space in my school’s building or at least an inconspicuous courtyard. i mean, what’s the point if i can’t practice?

relearn it 14 months ago

it’s been two years since i’ve done any tai chi. i found a teacher in the area who does the same style i used to practice. i went to a class saturday and i remember most of the moves, but just need to remember the proper transitions and what not. so, i hope this can get checked off soon.

i need to find a place to practice. my house is too little and crowded with furniture. there’s a park near my house. maybe if i wake up early enough, i can do it there without getting harassed by the neighborhood riffraff. hmmm. we’ll see about that.

i love it, though. i love it.

I can do it!! 17 months ago

This morning I did the whole thing on my own, with no slip-ups. It’s taken 40 days of daily practice but hooray, I can finally do it from memory!

This means that I no longer have to mess around with the DVD player in the morning, I can just get up, do some stretches, do the tai chi, and maybe do it twice sometimes just for kicks! and then do my exercises. I can see this developing into a really nice morning routine.

And sometime soon I hope to try it outside! Wheee!

I think this is what it comes down to.

Yesterday I was on the train home, impatient to get home and away from the mad throng of noisy smelly inconsiderate commuters, when it somehow occurred to me that just sitting, deliberately, with my hands deliberately placed in my lap, was calming. I didn’t break out and do a head-crishing move in the middle of the train, but there was something about placing my body in a deliberate way that reminded me of tai chi and made me remember some of the peace I feel doing it in the morning.

I think those 10-15 minutes of practice every morning give me a little stash of calmness that I can plug into throughout the day, whenever I need a top-up, and that can stop me over-reacting to things and to deal with stress better.

I am also starting to think that this is very much linked to the development of my curious ability to make better eating choices over the past few weeks. I think it’s partly the increased awareness of and connection with my body, as well as the lower stress levels.

to make a habit, is that right?
Yesterday was day 21 and I had a longer session, trying to remember what I could without the DVD. I got about halfway through before confusion set in, which I think represents progress. I’m going to keep on doing this every morning and hopefully in another three weeks I’ll be able to remember more of it…

really enjoying 18 months ago

the process of doing this every morning – I feel like it kind of anchors the start of my day. I am starting to wonder if this is helping me to stay on an even keel in terms of calmness and cope-ability, and also whether it’s responsible for my awakeness during the day (although I have been sleeping pretty excellently the past few weeks as well). I’m really glad I started this and really glad I’ve kept it up – there’s not been a day yet when I’ve woken up and really felt like not doing it.

for 10 days in a row now, and I feel pretty confident that in a couple of months I will be able to remember most of it and then try it outside, wheee

Well I have actually been doing some practice! Amazing!
I gave up working through step-by-step as I found it quite frustrating how the DVD repeats the same bits over and over but never from the same angle – it’s very hard to get an idea of what’s going on! Instead, I have just been doing the whole run-through, even if it’s not exactly perfect yet, it’s a lot more interesting and challenging, and I can get into the flow of it a bit more. It’s become part of my evening routine and I find it very calming – managed to get through the whole thing in tears once but on the whole I finish it more relaxed than when I started, which is helping me sleep better and wake up calmer too.

I want to keep this goal up until I have the whole thing memorised. Looking forward to doing it in the park at some point as well…!

try and do a little bit each day (as many days as possible anyway!) – maybe learn a new move each time and try to get to the end by the end of January? We’ll see.
I already feel more relaxed after just a little bit, and I think this should be good for strength and flexibility too. This should be something I can carry on with in Japan as well…
