How to take a homeless person out to lunch
How I did it: As I was walking to lunch one day a homeless man asked me for money. I told him I didn't have any cash but that I was going to lunch and asked if I could get him anything. His eyes lit up and he asked me if I could get some wings and french fries for him from Aunt Flo's. I told him absolutely and we walked inside and ordered his food. He told me he had been living on free bologna sandwiches from the church for a week.
It amazed me afterwards how the happiness from this act spread. His happiness made me happy. He also told the cashier and the cook what I had done and it made both of them happy as well. For a year afterwards they always greeted me with smiles and waves in spite of the fact that I never ate at their establishment. $5 bought a whole lot of happiness that day. I highly recommend you try it any time you get the opportunity.
Lessons & tips: Remember that one of the worst things about being homeless is feeling invisible. If people give you money at all they do so without looking at you. Offering to buy them lunch and actually talking and listening to them is worth far more than you can ever imagine and the payback is huge.
