volunteer locally

The last entry I wrote about this (two years ago) turned out to be something I didn’t follow through with. Things got kinda crazy in my life and this fell by the wayside.

But since I’ve taken my comps and feel a lot more stable than I did then, I want to try this again. I’ve been looking at local volunteer opportunities and have found a couple of things I might want to get involved with over the summer (probably after teaching Summer I).

One is to volunteer with animals at a local no-kill animal shelter. I love animals and I care deeply about helping them find homes and avoid abuse and unnecessary death, so I’d like to be able to support this shelter.

Another might be to volunteer as a librarian at a local natural history and science museum. I feel less strongly about the issue, but I would feel good about helping out the institution and it would probably be a lighter gig.

Eventually, I’d like to consider volunteering at a local women’s shelter or a place that supports victims of abuse, but I definitely need to work up to dealing directly with people.

Again, this is another thing I thought I’d get to do over the summer, but I realized suddenly that I’m almost out of time here. I would try to volunteer in State College, but it kind of doesn’t make sense since I want to do environmental cleanup, and State College is pretty much in the middle of nowhere and doesn’t really need it.

I found this neat program online, the Cage Comforter Program, and I contacted the local animal shelter to see if they had a program like this in place. They do not, but I’ve written them again to volunteer my services to make blankets for the animals to help in a similar way.

Since I can’t adopt the poor creatures myself, I want to do something to help their lives be better and to help them find homes.

Now I’m just waiting on more detailed information from the shelter about what they’d need, and I will start making little blankets.

This is really easy to do. I just need to get off of my butt. I’m on an email list for a local organization called “Our Community Place” They do all sorts of fun things. Note to self: stop being lazy!

i need to find a place locally for the year, and then! find a place for the summer either over seas or out of state. emphasis on the over seas part. and africa. like uguanda. or south africa. or ethiopia. or on a mission trip to turkey. rambling. sorry!
