Gemma is thinking about starting up her 43things again
So I’ve got a reservation at the Wolseley next week … and it’s dissapeared from the list, godammit!
It was on the 2005 list.
Oh well – maybe my goal should be to visit restaurants on last year’s list. I’m doing well at that one.

The new list was published this week …
http://www.theworlds50best.com/bestlist.aspx
And the restaurant I visited on Friday night (and subjected my vegetarian friend to offal) is now no longer on the list. I’m not suprised as I wasn’t overly impressed.
New targets:
El Bulli (in Spain, not too far from Girona)
The Fat Duck – Bray
Nobu – London (I love Japanese food)
Le Gavroche – London

I visited the Checchina dal 1887 in Rome on Friday. I’m not convinced about this place. Maybe I’m not enough of a foodie or maybe I’m just not into offal enough.
The food was good, although not outstanding and the place lacked atmosphere in my opinion. Also, my vegetarian friend struggled with the menu.
I’ve had better meals and also better meals in Rome.

I’ve just received confirmation of a reservation for the Checchino Dal 1887 in Roma for Friday night. This restaurant is number 23 on the 2005 list.
The new 2006 list is out in a couple of weeks.

Went to St John on Friday evening with 3 friends. When you walk into the bar area you feel like you’re in an old bakery or dairy – I really liked the atmosphere in the bar … lots of chattering, beer and wine drinking and not a cocktail umbrella in sight.
Up the stairs into the dining room it was less busy, but we’d only been able to get a table for 7.30 and was very early for dinner.
I had grilled sardines with a green sauce followed by the most delicious piece of roasted pork (called Middlewhite) with parsnips. The crackling on the pork was awesome and the meat was so tender and tasty perfectly cooked. Everything was really really well done with no disappointments. The wine to accompany was also really good with the waitress letting us taste a couple of different ones to decide which we wanted.
Although we were completely full after our main course we managed to squeeze in a plate of freshly cooked madeleines between the 4 of us.
Overall – completely delicious, great service and a down to earth kinda place.

Gemma is thinking about starting up her 43things again
Since I’m trying to get fitter and leaner I’ve decided that quality over quantity is the way to go.
So having discussed with friends over the weekend – we’re going to try and visit one truely great restaurant per month.
We’ve agreed that the first one or two will be:
Others I’d like to visit are:
- The Fat Duck, Bray
- Hakkasan (I’ve been for cocktails and Dim Sum, but not for a full on meal)
- The Ivy
- Cal Pep, Bcn.
- Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons, Oxfordshire I think
I’m heading to Rome in April and would be interested if anyone has any recommendations of amazing places to eat there.
