The only times I’ve given money to a person who asked me on the street was after they had given a convincing story that made me feel like they could really use the money. Every time I felt like I got scammed. One time I watched the guy who just begged me for gas money so he could get home walk away from me, ask a few other people for change and get in his parked car and drive away. Another time I got a story about a guy who got stranded in Seattle and needed bus fare. A week later he asked me again and gave me the same story. A week after that he asked me again. But this time he had a heart condition and he needed to buy medication.
The only time I felt good about giving a guy on the street some change was when he bet me he could do a backflip. I agreed to give him a dollar if he did it right then. So he turned around and did a backflip off a wall. I said he was cheating because he used the wall to gain altitude but I gave him the money anyway because it was sweet.
