watch tower climb 5 months ago

In substitute for a water tower I climbed an old abandon watch tower. I really wanted to see the sun rise from the top of the tower. I started my venture at around 5 am and parked about a half mile away and rode my bike to the base. The base of the tower was surrounded by trees making it easy to hop the barbed wire fence without worry of getting caught. I threw a rope over one of the metal rails and used my rock climbing equipment to ascend the first 30 feet for the stairs did not go down to the ground. Once I got to the stairs I found that this watch tower was a lot older than I thought. The wood planks did not look trustworthy so I stepped on the outside of each step the whole way. There were a couple scary spots on the ascent. There was a section where the hand rail was loose with a missing support at one end. One spot had 2 consecutive steps missing. In another spot the switch back platform was completly gone. When I got to the top there’s an observation box but the floor was no longer there. I stood in the corner on the ridge that would have held the floor in place and partially hung out the windows. From there the view was magnificent. I watched the sun rise and spent some time with God and made a promise to him. Then I reached from my back pocket a DVD, broke it in 2 and threw it away. I watched the 2 pieces float away into the trees and my reason for climbing the tower was achieved. The more difficult journey has begun.

In search of a tower 11 months ago

After observing a few towers I would like to find one that is slightly out of the way to avoid getting caught. Also one with a worth while view at the top is important. If anyone knows of a good tower please let me know. I’m willing to go a good distance within reason. Preferably within the mid-Atlantic region (PA, MD, DE, VA, WV)

more than a physical climb 12 months ago

Does anyone know of a good water tower to climb? I’ve been casually keeping my eyes out and I haven’t found a good one yet.
Every once in a while I will have that aspiration to ascend something really tall and be rewarded when I reach the top. Driving this desire inside me is to symbolically overcome hurdles within myself. When climbing the water tower I want accomplish this goal knowing that I have defeated a great challenge that I once felt scared to try and wasn’t sure that I could overcome. The reality of this challenge is I know the difficult part is getting off the ground and doing it without the wrong people knowing.

I just saw a video of some kids scaling rooftops and things and it reminded me of my youth :)
Watching it I thought “I want to scale fences like that. I want to climb up something impressive like a water tower. Oh, I did scale some fences. Oh, I climbed up a water tower!” So I’m adding it to my accomplished list a few years later, even though it was never really on my to-do list. It was okay, but it was daylight and it was dumb luck we didn’t get caught. We had to come down right at the top because my friend’s kinda-boyfriend was being a drama queen. Oh, well. It counts.

See now I thought it would be awesome to explain one day why I was arrested… – My employer; “I see you have a criminal record, you’ve been arrested b/f; may i ask why?” -Me; “Yeah, I climbed a water tower.”

Fun fun

It was very scary, but will always be a cool thing to tell people about!

Basically, it’s fun just to say you did it.

What is holding me back is picturing myself during a job interview having to explain why I was arrested for climbing a water tower. Some employers may not appreciate that sense of adventure.
