Why not learn to speak Chinese? 15 months ago

I want to read and write Chinese as it’s one of the main world languages and likely to become even more important over the next decade. I think learning to speak Chinese will be too hard though as there isn’t a Chinese community nearby so I’ll stick to the printed word, for now at least.

I am hoping to learn pretty much most of the radicals by the end of the month.

hah, hanging out with my sister amber who’s lived in taiwan the last ten years has sure had an impact on me. i’ve been listening to so much chinese pop, hahah. it’s the only chinese music i’ve heard of, it’s not so bad. i make my mom teach me bopomofo too. i’m kinda disappointed they never took the time to properly teach me all that when i was little. though i probably wouldn’t have had the slightest desire to learn at that time. whatever, i’m learning now. someone help me :]]

Podcast! 3 years ago

I found a podcast a while ago that I’ve been listening to. It’s at ChinesePod.com. Twelve minutes a pop, easy to listen to three or four times.

Now to figure out how to read and write, but speaking will help me impress when I’m at the Chinese restaurants.

I am learning Chinese now 3 years ago

Not too easay. BTW, I use an open source Chinese software from http://zdt.sourceforge.net, it’s pretty cool.

In Firefly, everyone is fluently bi-lingual in English and Chinese 500 years in the future. As China gains more and more ground, it’ll be increasingly important for Americans to learn to speak, read, and write Chinese.

In studying Korean 15 years ago, I learned a few Chinese characters (at one time, I knew 1500 of them), but I don’t remember most of them now. And I certainly never learned to pronounce them in Chinese.
