We got to Chinatown a bit late and it was raining (so many beautiful umbrellas!), but the parade was still going strong and by the end it had cleared up and the sun was out.
I was hoping we’d find my brother (who was drumming for some lion dancers) but we missed him. Isak seemed to enjoy it more this year, watching in awe and clutching his red balloon. Afterwards we went out for some delicious Chinese food and then home for a much needed nap.
Happy New Year!

I celebrated Chinese New Year with some friends of my family’s. The father is a first-generation American and his brother came over and cooked this amazing meal for everyone. It was incredible! I can’t wait until next year!

Wonderful! We went to the parade for a couple of hours this afternoon.
Isak napped for a bit then woke up (we got him a big golden triple-decker New Year’s whirligig) and watched everything as the brilliantly colored confetti rained down over us and we walked around among dancing lions & dragons, suspended lettuce and firecrackers.
I loved the mixed smells of gunpowder, incense, and food, all the colors everywhere, children playing, the drums, the old buildings and beautiful trash in the gutters; rainbows & gold…

Our daughter got the flu so we couldn’t go. I was so looking forward to it too!

We’re planning to go to Chinatown for the New Year parade!
I remember going with my parents when I was a little girl – there was a combination of fear (all the firecrackers and noise made me nervous) and giddy excitement – Real dragons! Dancing! SO much color!
We’ll see what Isak thinks…
“If you were born in 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983 or 1995 – you were born under the sign of the pig. Like the pig, you are highly regarded for your chilvary and pureness of heart, and you often make friends for life. For pigs in 2007, any recent setbacks or obstacles can be overcome so look forward to a year in which to really shine, either personally or professionally.”

Went to Cyrildene and hung out with my Chinese friends. Then some random rich guy bought everyone supper. Woo hoo! I am totally going back this year.
