Nine years  — 6 days ago

Went TV-less for nine years while raising our children. It’s life-changing and HIGHLY recommended.

When you don’t have a TV, you can’t imagine having one. You wonder, “How do people even have the time to watch TV?”

Do it; you won’t regret it.

TV Free Challenge  — 3 weeks ago

In high school one of my teachers challenged his students to go a year without watching tv. I decided to do this spur of the moment, but I did accomplish it.

I lived without a television from the time I was in 3rd grade until my Junior year of High school… aka 8 years. they were the most active, well read, productive years of my life. CHEERS to this goal!!

Did this for two years in college and didn’t miss it at all! I was so busy studying and spending time with new friends and being creative, I can’t imagine there would’ve been time to watch TV. I only missed it when there was some big news going on in the world and I wanted to be connected.

I’m making backwards progress on this one…. Tomorrow AT&T is coming over to install Uverse. It has a DVR that can record FOUR shows at once! Four! Oy… I might have to save this “thing” until we move to Portland.

No TV - are you mad  — 3 months ago

I did this when I was renting a bedsit (1 room flat) in London.

It was actually really easy to do. I used to tape (how sad am I) a regular soap on the radio called “The Archers” and listen to it when I got home. I also made sure that on Tuesdays at 6.30 I was either listening or taped a comedy show.

It was really amazing how much of the talk at work was about television programmes. People would start by saying ‘did you see … on tele last night’ – uh, no I don’t have a tele. ‘What’

Easy peasy. It lasted for near on 18 months.

No TV for 1 year  — 4 months ago

Was thinking about doing this, then sat at home and watched tv all day. Just started reading the Sunday paper and come to find out that this is the beginning of TV Turnoff Week. Seems like now’s as good a time as any to go without tv.

    Wish me luck.

    Step One: cancel the cable.
Finally did it. I need to go return the cable box sometime this week, but this is so much better already. Plus, my antenna gets absolutely awful reception. It’s instantly discouraging me from watching TV.

As of now, I plan on keeping the TV itself just for use in video cassette playing, assuming I get a new VCR or my old one fixed.

but there is no reception that it receives. We have a dvd/stereo/vhs player connected to it and we watch movies from our collections, what we check out from the library and now we do the cheapest netflix as well. But, we don’t have any news or reality shows, or any commercials. We are living as far away from “corporate” America as we can when it comes to the television.
