How I did it: I was lucky and had a friend who suggested a lot of bands to get me going on my goal. Once I found a few bands that I really enjoyed it was easier to research other types of music that I might be interested in. Also the website pandora.com helped a ton and I still use it to find new bands. Read how I did it…

I was at the mall the other night and heard what I later learned was probably the Justice remix of this song, and it interested me enough to hang around the store to finish listening to it. I made it a point to remember some of the lyrics, jot them down later and google them up.

(This album is on LP I see; much preferred to so many CD recordings nowdays which are overcompressed and squashed to smithereens, taking half the life out of the recording. This assuming the LP recording hasn’t been subjected to the same treatment.)
This is a great example of one sort of music I’m wanting more of. It’s also a reminder of the long-time frustration I’ve had with discovering new and recent music. If this got any radio airplay, it’s highly unlikely to have been around here. We have a pretty crappy radio market here in town, crowded airwaves notwithstanding. My only means right now is to run across them by chance, like what happened here.
after being on my list almost from the get-go. I’ve actually been doing this to an extent the whole time.
A recent example: The KLF: The White Room – yes, the 1991 album known for “3 A.M. Eternal”. This album has been in regular rotation since I got it a couple months ago (apart from the Christmas season when that music was at the forefront); I should have gotten it back in 1991/92 and I would have enjoyed it all this time since. My favorite songs have been “No More Tears” and “Justified And Ancient” although I rank most of the album highly.
I want to do this. i hav a friend who always has great new music, and i feel lame bcuz i always am listening to the same stuf as 6 months ago.I did find a great, non-mainstream band called We The Kings, who are responsible for the song Check Yes Juliet.

It pays to have an open mind when it comes to music – if you hear something that has a quirky hook or it just really hits you, write it down, and it doesnt matter if you heard it on mainstream or alternative radio. Really, music should unify, not divide people. I’ve learnt to embrace all kinds of music – obviously I’ve got the genres I like and music I dislike, but when someone says theyre a fan of a very poppy song, and it is actually really catchy, I’m not afraid to agree. You make more friends when you dont take yourself too seriously: one of the coolest friends I’ve ever made admitted he was a bit of a Justin Timberlake fan. Before, I wouldve tried to be “Cool”, but instead I said ‘Yeah, I dont mind some of his stuff.’ He said he liked that song ‘Senorita’ and I said, without thinking, ‘That’s off Justified, the debut album…’ and he said, with a grin, ‘See, everyone’s a closet JT fan.’
I found:
-Jens Lekman
-Vampire Weekend
-The Black Keys
-The Mess Hall
-That justin timberlake song thats so catchy off his second album, LoveStoned :D
