    adoption?  — 2 years ago

Having a Pit sanctuary/ rescue is a long way off. But I’d at least like to adopt one to rescue it from the euthanasia needle. I’m trying to convince my roommate. But he’s one of those people who just doesn’t trust the breed. We’ll probably end up vying for a lab or something that would have been adopted anyway.

Not my favorite dog  — 2 years ago

While I’m more a fan of bigger, fuzzier dogs, my heart breaks for this breed. They are such a stigmatized, abused and misunderstood breed.
Last year I went to a shelter to help my mom pick out a dog. We walked by dozens of pits and pit mixes, stiff tails wagging, excitedly whining, and mom wanted no part of them. The breed or anything resembling it was out- period. I felt like we were giving each one a death sentence.
I too was nervous around them until I agreed to be the dog sitter for a family of 3 canine brothers, the youngest of which was a pit. The goofball had no idea he was feared and was supposed to be a brute and was the favorite among all of the dog park regulars.
Unless they have been raised to be aggressive, these dogs are the clowns of the species. Stubborn and aloof, no doubt, but with a zest for life and play that is unparrelled.
I’m not a fool. I don’t believe every dog can be rehabilitated. But it isn’t their fault if they’ve been abused and this shouldn’t preclude them from living out a life with a good meal and a warm comfy place to stay, even if they might need to be segregated in certain cases.
