First 1/4 of 12 hour class. 3 weeks ago

Went to the first self defense class today. The instructors were nice and kept it fun. We spent about 2 hours listening to a presentation and talking then learned some basic stances and blocking. On Saturday we are going to be learning kicks and other maneuvers.

Jiu Jitsu seems scarily hardcore.. 4 weeks ago

I drive by a Jiu Jitsu training facility on my way to class, and now that Syed has started ninja training, I am feeling like I too need to make an active effort to learn self defense.

I like that unlike some other martial arts, Jiu Jitsu teaches you how to safely get out of situations where you end up on the ground or in other compromising places.

After pulling this particular place up online, and seeing that they offer a free intro class, I am tempted to give it a try. I’m also afraid that I am too gimpy and too much of a wuss (herniated discs in my spine, exercise-induced asthma, fibromyalgia, etc) to be able to keep up or really get anything out of the class.

And I feel like that if I had someone (not Syed!) to do this with, I would be so much more okay with at least checking out the free trial class.

This is something that pops into my head every once in a while but I’ve always dismissed for various reasons.

However, I also think I would feel better if all the people I care about knew a little self defence and therefore think I should do it so that they feel I’m safer also.

Plus I think I may be able to do it as an evening course from work. This is good because it will be discounted but I will have to wait until September when the new prospectus is confirmed, and then just hope it doesn’t clash with my creative writing class.

This is definitely something I should have done BEFORE I moved to Chicago…

I’m looking for classes!

I have taken a couple of self defense class already in school. I was close contact defence, how to get out of rape situations, learn how not to be dragged or carried off ect. It was very helpful and i want to do more.

I’ve been thinking about this for a while now, I never want to be in the situation where I can’t fight my way out… and I think this is something everyone should do

Ok, so while I have done this; its the type of thing I think you have to keep doing. I took a few classes, but they are one-time things not like a dedicated art. I think I should look into a dedicated art instead of just working out in general. Maybe basic boxing… I have heard that is the best basic before you go to the harder longer-term arts like ju-jitsu or karate.

I found something pretty cool 10 months ago

I started a train at home self defense course. At first I thought it wouldn’t work, but I took them up on the introductory offer and it was a lot easier then I thought. The hardest thing I had to do was get a training dummy, but I found one on ebay. You can do it with just a punching bag, but I like the reality of the dummy.

Now I’m getting ready for my next training module- it’s pretty exciting.

You can check it out at www.theselfdefenseco.com They have instructors, but the training system fit my schedule and budget.

I think I needed more than a couple classes of this. A few years later, I was sexually assaulted, and the self-defense things were not fresh in my mind and I froze.

If I were to redo this, I’d probably take it over the course of several months to drill this into my head.

I signed up for mixed martial arts this fall semester at my college. Hopefully, I’ll stick with it and not get too discouraged.
