I’ll keep posting to this from time to time, but I think for now I want my focus off of things like eating out!

If you are fond of pastrami, or of 50’s era diners, check it out. Takes only cash—no plastic, no checks. All the fixtures are original, and rumor has it that some of the waitresses are, too.

It’s a tiny little place on Sepulveda in Culver City. It isn’t health food, but it is delicious. Hours are generous: 10 am to at least 1 am every day; on Friday and Saturday it’s open until 3 am.

The good stuff. New York style. Slice of cheese for just $2.35. They also have great salads(mixed fresh for you), sandwiches, soups, and pasta.

Located on west Wilshire between Fairfax and La Jolla, on the North side.

KJ’s diner at 8731 Lincoln Blvd (near the intersection with Manchester) has great diner food, friendly staff, and a bowling alley attached to it! The AMF El Dorado Bowl adds an additional dimension to the diner atmosphere.

KJ’s is quite friendly about substitutions, if you are on a diet. They seem to be friendly about everything.

I don’t know the name of the kiosk with Falafel and other Middle Eastern goodies at the Farmers’ Market (by the Grove) but I heartily recommend it. If you want to close your eyes and be in Jerusalem, I don’t know of a better place!

I have just moved here and I have a thing for breakfast on Sundays, so my first entry will be on a breakfast joint. LeRoy’s is in Monrovia, right off the 210 on Huntington. Exit Huntington Dr and go east. It is on the left after a couple of blocks. You will pass a Trader Joes on your right.

LeRoy’s is inexpensive, and serves up big breakfast. They have a counter you can sit at if you are on your own. They call you ‘Hon’ and is all American Breakfast should be!

Vinoteca is a new beer and wine bar on Hillhurst Ave. in Los Feliz that opened in late 2005. Started (I believe) by the folks at Farfalla (on the same block), Vinoteca offers dining options from Tropicalia, the Brazilian restaurant next door. The empanadas are bigger than my fist, and I’ve enjoyed each of the entrées I’ve had there. Ideal dining for two, since the space severely limits the number of tables. They offer dozens of wines by the glass, ranging between $7 and $12. Vinoteca has definitely seen an uptick in popularity—we used to be able to stroll in and take our pick of tables. Our last two visits we’ve had to wait for seating. But I would still definitely recommend it.

This is a converted firehouse which I just discovered. I really liked their food and the price is medium to high. They have 2 patios (Front and Back). Also, their bar is lovely. It’s a good place to have an intimate night with friends and family. Highly recommended. It’s in the Silverlake area.

Mao’s Kitchen in Venice is, I think, the best Chinese restaurant I’ve eaten at in LA. It’s on Pacific, near the corner of Windward. It’s a pretty small place, but we’ve been able to get tables (some of them are long communal tables, to fit with the name and communist propaganda on the walls) quickly on Saturday nights with no problem.
