I finally took the leap and signed up for a package of private and group lessons in January 2009 at the Arthur Murray Studio in Sunrise, FL. Unfortunately, I was traveling for work at the time, so I only got as far as 3 lessons in 3 months. I stopped going although I had paid for the lessons already because it was just too stressful – just one more thing I had to do over the weekend.
Then in starting in September when I no longer had to travel for work – in between jobs right now—I started where I left off. I have to admit, I was still very timid during the first month. I would go for 2 private lessons a week. I had signed up for a 40 unit package in January, but only paid for half of it at the time because it does cost a lot. However, with the package I got, you get 40 private lessons, but unlimited group lessons so it is worth it if you are serious about getting good, and are willing to put in the time. After September, I finally got over my fears and started going to some of the group lessons and private parties. Don’t get me wrong during the first 1-2 months, it was somewhat stressful and not totally enjoyable. However, now after month 2, I feel like I’m finally getting the hang of it and making some progress. The best part is when you just get to the point where you can stop thinking and just follow the guy’s lead. =) That is harder than it sounds. I am still far from where I want to be, but some of the girls there say they have been there for only 6 months, and I think they look fantastic and very elegant… So if I can even remotely be at there level at the 6 month mark, I will be very happy. We will see what I will be come in March. =)
Arthur Murray is a franchise so you should check it out no matter what city or state you are in. They are world reknown. =) http://www.arthurmurray.com/index.htm
Even if you can’t afford something like that or you are not that serious, just sign up for lessons at your local community school. That way you can learn the basic steps and maybe even timing of the dances without paying so much. Then if you realize you want more, then consider joining a studio. That is probably the best route. In hindsight, I probably didn’t need the first few lessons to teach me the basic steps if I already knew them. =O
As of right now, I have to say that this hobby is my favorite above photography and running although it couldn’t replace either of them. =)
Just in case any of you are wondering, I have learned the basics steps and then some for waltz, foxtrot, rumba, salsa, cha-cha-cha, swing, hustle, and samba.
