Start freelance translating

this is not the time for this, yet…

saying I “have potential” in response to my test submission, and asking me to try forthcoming tests. They also sent me a link to other people’s versions of the text which will be good for learning purposes – it’s kind of like an online course in a way.

I am happy with that. Not sure if I’ll get the next one in though as it’s probably due at the end of next week… maybe if I have loads of time on my hands!

I’d feel like translating tonight, even with the knowledge that the test text is due this week and I’d kind of earmarked tonight to finish it – but I sat down for 45 mins and got on with it and it’s done! So I have a bit of time to think up a profile while I was at it. Going to do a last read-through tomorrow and then send it.

I feel like I have turned over a new leaf!

I was having this conversation with one of the sub-bosses, we were laughing about filing or something and I came away thinking no wonder they all treat me like an unsophistocated filing secretary trog, I don’t let on about the secrets of my cunning and very sophistocated masterplan to wonk my way to the top take over the world!

And then I left work and it felt so good to think, I’m going home now to work on building my own job, finding my own work, using my skills to do something totally separate and totally my own. If I can make this work it will just be the best feeling in the world!

done today – two agency applications, online profile on a really juicy site, got paypal set-up, read through the bank stuff. It all takes a long time but I’m nearly at the end of my current list of prospects so I feel like I’ve made good progress today.

Loads of stuff to get on with now I finally have my green light!

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Quite unexpectedly, I had the chance to talk to my boss today about taking on some freelance work, and he agreed!! So it’s full speed ahead, and nothing is really standing in my way – it’s all down to me to get started now!

I was originally hoping to wait and see how my review went but I found out today that that’s being put back by another month (!!) and to be honest I don’t really care if my freelancing affects the offer now, it is what I want to do and with the way work is at the moment, there is nothing there that can compensate me for not taking the opportunity. It was spontaneous but it’s done and I’ve got a green light, within reason, to make a go of this for myself.

terrifies me a little… I still feel a bit like a dreamer.

But the fact is that I have two years’ experience under my belt and I do believe I can do this, if I go out there and find the breaks for myself.

I’ve got my Institute membership to show (to myself as much as anyone!) that I’m serious, my tax forms are ready to fill out, and I have a list of agencies ready to apply for.

I must must must clear this with my boss at my review else this’ll never get started, and I’m not prepared to stall on it any more.

I feel like I’m at the top of a hill on a bike waiting to push off…

I’m Russian. I study English for 12 years already. Currently I’m a student of the faculty of Cross Cultural Communications. I tried to translate and interprete for the first time a long time ago. I had some success. But now I want to become a real proffecional in this. It’s a really cool thing. Translaing articles and other texts from another languages one can get a lot of new information and experience. Last month I translated an article for my friend. It was devoted to the interaction of the law and economics. To tell the trueth It’s incredibly intersting, though I thought that I would never have any appeal to this two sciences.

I think that professional translating is something best left to those lucky, lucky people who had the great fortune to either be brought up bilingual or brought up in a different country, so that they are equally fluent in both languages.
