I so love politics... 2 months ago

I’m a staunch democrat and educated young female I want to change the world one issue at a time but I need to know how.

A realisation I had... 22 months ago

Well my entry below points to my being very much a “Progressive Libertarian”. That is what I support in reality but idealistically I think I am more of an Anarchist than anything else. Might be because I am young and have big ideas of freedom and haven’t been “shaken into the real world” as my parents say. “Individualist Anarchism” is the most ideal system but it is just that: a vision. Kinda like the vision of utopia, it won’t happen.

All I will say is I dislike social conservative attitudes. That also might be because I am young… but I really do not see the use of conservatism. Just my opinion.

My Political Positions - Liberal/Libertarian 23 months ago

Most politicians today they are stereotyped as “opportunistic bastards” and are not to be trusted, etc.. I want to change that and actually make a difference.

I am very much liberal/libertarian in my beliefs. There are some things I would like to see happen in Australia:

  • Develop our secondary industries – We have virtually none and rely on primary industry exports.
  • Construct a national electricity, national water and national telecommunications (incl. Broadband) network – This has been needed for a long time. The tropical north gets a lot of rain each day so there is potential to harness a lot of water and with a pipeline network we might be able to lessen the effects of drought in our major cities and agricultural industries.
  • Invest in renewable energy (and nuclear as carbon neutral) – We signed Kyoto so it’s time to get this on the drawing board.
  • Revive R&D funding – Over the last decade the Howard Government practically cut our research and development funding to nothing. We need to revive the CSIRO and funding in universities for research and development.
  • Make euthanasia under strict guidelines a legal practise – This will not go down well with pro-life supporters but I think the majority of Australians, if they found out they had malignant cancer and had a few months to live, would choose to die now rather than endure endless pain
  • Decrimminalise certain substances (chiefly mescaline, cannabis, LSD and psilocybin) – Call me a nutter if you will but if you do the research (which I have, for assignment) you’ll find that nicotine and alcohol are more dangerous and are classified as “hard drugs” whereas what I stated above are “soft drugs”. They are also not addictive unlike nicotine and alcohol. I guess it will be hard getting through to people because it is so deeply engrained that they are bad and wrong. I would also like to see smoking banned, but instead a better way to deliver nicotine for people. Most of the cancer and crap you get from smoking is not the nicotine but the other chemicals when you burn a cigarette. Nicotine is all you are after when you smoke so lets cut out the other dangerous chemicals aye! Also there are benefits, including the removal of hazardous supply (most drugs coming from “backyard labs”) and the government can levy it like with tobacco to produce more revenue.
  • STOP THE PRIVATISATION OF OUR HOSPITALS AND SOCIAL SERVICES – Basically the biggest mistake this country has taken. I think universal health care should be continued, not phased out.
  • Reform the constitution to “Everyone is born and lives equal regardless of age, faith, gender and sexuality” – I hate the way our government won’t even consider Civil Partnerships or Civil Unions for same-sex relationships. It is discrimination to the max. Everyone should have the same rights as everyone else, including the LGBT community. One day people who are homophobic will just have to get over it, just like how racism has declined and people are more accepting of different ethnic groups. I am not gay, but I have friends who are, and seriously they are no different to you or I.
  • Common Education Curriculum in Primary and Secondary Schools – We need this since there are different curriculums and marking schemes for every state practically. Many students when moving interstate have a hard time picking up on the new systems of study.
  • A foreign policy that is more independent of U.S. involvement – Howard has strengthened our alliance with the United States and we are now practically its strongest ally. However we must think for ourselves more than just “follow America”. The new Rudd Government is thinking for itself so that is a positive step. Overall I think our foreign policy should reflect our own values which are similar to that of the European Union and Canada more than the United States. Our interventionism should be aimed at places like Zimbabwe and Burma. We should assign a percent of our GDP that we contribute to international humanitarian missions.

Well some of those goals are a smack of idealism unfortunately but I would work towards them. Some need funding we don’t yet have so economic goals would be priority at first. Overall I aim to leave Australia as a more liberal, closer to ecomomical self-sufficiency, more intellectual/technological, more environmentally-friendly and more humanitarian.

Some other goals I might work towards are things that I deem to be restricting personal liberty (age of consent laws, abortion, etc.). I would need to do some deeper research into these fields and introspection before voicing an opinion.

Why has not one person left an entry about this awesome goal.. 2 years ago

I think some people don’t want to be quoted later in life.. When you are a politician they look for stuff…. Well I hope all 71 people as or 11/24/2007 that wanna be politicians wanna be honest politicians but we will see. Here is how I live every day and it helps me make this goal some reporter can quote this.. ” I was born for this” that’s all…
