the best thing is the look on the people eyes when you arrive… when someone says “thank you”... its the best thing ever. you feel alive like never before.
How to be a fireman
How I did it: I was conscripted into the Singapore army for my national service when I was 19 years old, and then posted to the Singapore Civil Defence Force to serve my remaining NS stint as a fire and rescue officer. It was not by choice but rather by luck that I was posted there and there were only 20 NSFs (Full time national servicemen) selected as officers and only 8 made it into fire stations. Needless to say, those who worked hard earned themselves a place in the fire station as a Rota Commander. This experience shaped my life, matured me as a person, and changed my life perspectives in many many ways.
Lessons & tips: It's hard work, physically and mentally draining. You gotta have quick reflexes, quick decision making skills, because every second counts to the life and death of the casualties you're gonna rescue.
Resources: more experienced firemen, an open mind.
