Three practices…not very long, but it made a difference in class on Sunday.
Followed my new practice strategy last night. Focusing on notes, and just holding each one til it’s strong and steady. Then did some arpeggios (or “alankaars” as they’re called in Hindustani music). Getting back to basics!
I practiced last night, and came up with a plan to incorporate some yoga into the practice. Half an hour of yoga and then then half hour for music practice.

This does seem intimidating, so I’m starting with a week for now.
Instead of our usual group lesson, I’m going to have private lessons this semester. I’m sure it will help advance a lot, but only if I put in the work. I know this (and it’s still hard to do – why?????). But this is a great opportunity and I need to take advantage of it.
I’ve practiced 45 minutes each day since Thursday! Very exciting.
Last night I did something that teacher always mentions, but I’ve never done. In Indian classical music, purity of note is stressed. In fact it’s the main principle. So I sang one note, which is the tonic note for my key (G#), for about 30 minutes. Just listening to minute changes in the sound, waverings or unsteadiness. When I went to sing other notes, and came back to the tonic, it was like it resonated with the whole room!

I practiced 4 times last week, and had class last night. I told my teacher I felt like I sound like crap…and it’s so upsetting. But he said I didn’t sound bad, it’s just that my ear is trained now to to hear more sensitively, so what was acceptable before is not now.
That felt good to hear, but not enough to overcome the feeling that I KNOW I can sound better wtih more practice. I would really like to up my practice time. On Sunday night I sang for about 45 minutes and I felt tired after that. So maybe I should try to up my practice time to at least 45 minutes, 4 times a week?
