step one: pack your stuff
step two: move your stuff
step three: unpack your stuff
That’s pretty much it.
Life is different down here. I grew up in Arkansas, so I knew what to expect. And I had a place to move to, since my parents lived in Georgia, so that made it simple.
But if you haven’t been to the South, there is a culture shock to expect (just as I’m sure there is anywhere else you move). Just don’t move here and expect America to be one homogeneous melting pot. We aren’t.
The American South is a uniquely wonderful place with a rich dark past – some things to be proud of, some things not, but at least everything is known.
There are no skeletons in our collective closet here. You know our past. The world knows the past of the American South. You know what we did and who we are but what people – a lot of people – haven’t figure out is who we are now is not who we were then.
The American South is incredible. Mercurial. Sweet to your face and tart to your back. Generous to a fault and always always proud. Of our country, our mama and our fill in the blank. We are a proud people. It’s part of being Southern.
And fiercely loyal. Once you are Southern, you are our people. And God save the fool that messes with our people because we will. mess. you. up. And I don’t mean that in a 12 year old my- daddy- is- bigger- than- your- daddy manner. I mean we will eat you up and spit you out because we love our friends and we always have their backs, no matter what.
Move here and experience it. I guarantee you, you’ll not want to move again.
