I am getting quite frustrated right now. I came back from abroad in March, I got my tour guide license and started to work in that field but I am not satisfied at all as the conditions are nothing I was told they would be, the job is tough and very low paid. And I need to earn enough to actually be able to move out of my parents house. I had to go back and it really frustrates me. Need to find the right thing…

Fruit/Veggie Market 21 months ago

Well, I’m in Florida kicking about, and thought I would stop by a town where I know a couple folks and say hi. One of the places I stopped in was a place I used to work, just to visit. Well, by the end of the visit I had been secured a job and already worked about 4 hours. This is really just a temporary thing, next month or two, but still a nice little gig. A great way for me to save some money for my Portland move, anyhow, because I get mad amounts of free veggies.

In a totally unexpected move, the boss had been letting me sleep in the produce truck. That was something I thought was cool enough, but then he made me a key for the back office, and said I can stay there. There’s definitely a lot of camping on the beach in my future, but it’s really nice to have a place with a roof and where I can put my backpack when the weather sucks.

Such a great turn of events!

Why is this the first time? 2 years ago

It’s ridiculous that I’ve never looked for a job this way before, but it’s high time that I do.
In the last year, though, I’ve had such a huge set of value changes that I don’t suppose that I ever had criteria for a satisfying job before. Here’s what I DON’T want in a job
I Don’t: want to make a corporate exec rich
want to work in the food industry unless it’s sustainable
want to be a salesman for primarily imported goods
want to work in a place that disrespects the environment
want to work somewhere that disrespects me as a person
want to have to make a major commute to work

Mostly I guess I just want a place where I don’t have to compromise my values, or have to create a second identity for myself. I don’t want to have to create a John-at-work, and a John-everywhere-else. And learning a new set of skills would be a nice bonus.

Finally we’re winning, and in the words of Gov. Dean today, “It’s like the NCAA, you have to win 3 more for it to count!” One down.
