I did the half marathon because I wanted to prove to myself that when there’s a will there’s a way. Right now, I am going through a very rigorous residency program. I keep the medal on my front door, so that I see the metal before I leave for the day’s work. I say to myself, “If I can complete the half marathon, I can complete this residency program.”
I also learned how to push my physical body to the limits, using my mind. When training for the marathon, the hardest part is just the first step of putting on the workout gear and getting yourself to start. There is certainly a mind over matter element to finishing the half marathon. During the marathon, whenever I had a cramp in my side for example I took deep breaths and actually talked to that particular muscle and told it to hang in there and uptake more oxygen. And the pain disappeared. It works. I encourage everyone to take on this challenge because you can stretch and extend the boundaries of your willpower. 3 months ago
How I did it: I started running between 5-10km throughout the week from January 2011... In the weeks leading up to the marathon I was doing a lot of cycling training for 'around the bay' on weekends which helped significantly. I'd never run more than 10km but had no difficulty on race day... I kept a slow but steady pace and didn't really tire out until the last 2km... Apart from slightly sore knees I'm feeling great!! :-) Finished up in 2 hours which was good considering I was just hoping for less than 3! Read how I did it… 4 months ago
