Reading Music doesn't have to be difficult 2 months ago

I’ve been a professional musician for over 30 years and taught music to hundreds of students. The only difficulty in reading music is understanding all the weird and wonderful symbols. With this in mind I have created a website to help everyone out:

I started piano when I was 4. 3 months ago

So I don’t even remember not being able to read music. Its a good skill, just takes lots of practice! Definitely worth it!

just started exercise 1.1 on mastering the piano…i’m learning that this endeavor will require a great deal of focused attention. Something I’m struggling with at this point in my life…so the exercises will be good for me. I just need the discipline to stick with it.

It's worth it to learn how to read music... 1 year ago

...if you have a need for it, of course. I’ve been able to read music since I was 8, I’d say, when my mom first started teaching me piano. I then started saxophone when I was 12. I can read the treble clef like it’s actual words no problem at all. The left hand comes a bit more difficult for me, as I don’t play a bass instrument, but I know where middle ‘C’ and the ‘G’ and ‘C’ after middle ‘C’ are so I can quickly go through the notes in my mind while playing a piano piece. With some songs, I don’t really have to ‘read’ the notes while I play per se, I just have to see them and I guess they guide me without me actually, physically having to read every single one of them (I’ve tried playing some songs before without using music and I got lost…so I guess looking at the music for well known songs helps, although there are some songs I have memorized just by playing them over and over again).

Is it psychological? I’ve played the piano for years, but I just cannot learn how to read music. Sometimes I can read a simple melody line with the right hand, and make up the left hand harmony, but I find it very difficult to read multiple notes with the right hand, and impossible to read anything with the left hand. I know what the notes are, and I know the theory. I can write music longhand or with a screen package, but just cannot read, not even what I’ve written myself. As I said, is it psychological?

But like most things you get rusty if you don’t use it frequently.
