Looking to snowboard all season long in Chile and/or Argentina. looking for like minded people to hook-up with and ride fresh powder! I will have a very decent amount of money to spend but have no interest in 5 star hotels or anything like that. Would rather hook up with some locals and maybe rent a room for the season. Really plan on doing alot of heli-riding. I am in my 30’s, learning spanish and very fun and normla guy who has always wanted to ride in South America!

Has anyone been to Portillo? I’m thinking of going this summer and looking to connect with people who have been so I can get advice on best weeks to go and stuff like that.
I like South America, particularly the Andes. Not sure why. Hear the skiing down there is pretty decent, and not that crowded or expensive. Not that I wouldn’t want to ski elsewhere, but still something I’d love to do.
When I was planning a trip with my girlfriend at the time, I wanted to go to Europe and she wanted to go to South America so we compromised and went to South America. While I was down there I decided to see Chile and do some skiing. We flew down and drove up to a resort called El Colorado. The rental agency gave me a beat up Hyunday and I could not figure out why until I got to the mountain. It took four hours to get up the icy and narrow pass and I slid off the road twice and sideswiped a bus. Once I got to the top, it was blizzard conditions but I only had one day so I said “screw it” and skied anyway. I was fun, cheap and the powder was hip deep but I prefer alpine skiing and the trip to the slopes was too dangerous to make it worthwhile. I am glad I went but next time I would go to Colorado or the Alps.
i guess i’m biased, being chilean and all, but it really is a great place to practice a lot of sports.
in valdivia, where i live,it’s great for water sports but we’re also very close to a lot of volcanos and mountains.
a little more to the north is the villarica vulcano (i wanna to hike to the top next summer) and pucón is a great place to spend a few days, ski or snowboard, relax, etc. it has different slopes for all people. there are very hard ones and a couple of half-pipes, a nice long one for general public, a shorter one if you’re starting and wanna practice, etc.
after the first chair, there’s a cafeteria, and a few shops. my mom likes to sit there and read a book with a hot chocolate while we ski. there’s a big fireplace for when you have decided to give up after your 10,000 fall and need to rest and de-freeze.
this winter i want to go to huilo-huilo. it’s rather new but i’ve heard great things and it’s not at all expensive.
Not too many people can say that they have skiied in the southern hemisphere. So I plan to do exactly that by skiing in Chile where the US Ski Team trains in the summer.
